45-70 long range target bullet options

Hatcher did max distance testing with the 30-06 and the barrel elevation that produced max range was something like 35 deg IIRC.

For sure! Max range needs a lot of elevation. I guess I just wanted to say that most people think you really need to have a huge angle to shoot long range with the old single shots, but as far as long range target shooting ( 800-1000 yards ) it isn't really all that bad. Terrible compared to a modern long range cartridge, but less than most people expect.

The time of flight does make for an interesting experience. At anything 800 yards or further I can let off the shot, follow through, and then lean over and look through my spotting scope to watch the impact :)

Now you have opened up a can of worms mr. Call DMay and he will give you some pointers on what to shoot in that gun.
Don't shoot copper plated in a gun like that. Cast a 500 to 525gr bullet slathered in SPG lube. Find and order the book SPG Lubricants BP Cartridge Reloading Primer (Steve Garbe & Mike Venturino).
Welcome to the world of black powder. Wads, papper patching, BP compression, lubes, sights on the gun and many other things. Cleaning up after is very important. I have taken my Pedersoli: 1874 Sharps Competition (.45-70) out to 1000 wearing a Long Range 406 PED Soule tang sight with a hadley eye piece. Only load what you will shoot that month. Don't load to far in advance. Load friday night, shoot it all up sat & sunday. I have 3 45/70's. Have fun.
I also have 20lbs of Bees wax.

Some of the bullets we are using will get up to about 0.5 G1 BC. My .458" 535gr Buffalo Arms money bullets trajectories match a .5 BC trajectory almost exactly out to 1000 yards.

Chris.

I did a bunch of ballistics work with subsonic projectiles and the BC below the speed of sound is huge. Drag is vastly less when the bullet is not compressing air to creat a supersonic shockwave. This is why these large caliber, very heavy bullets can be lobbed out to ridiculous distances.

You won't need anywhere near 45 degrees to shoot long range. I worked it out once and my 1000 yard sight settings are under 7 degrees. It does feel like quite an angle once you try and get a cheek weld though.

Chris.

7 Degrees is about 420MOA. That sounds about right for the old 45-70 at that range.

Maybe I had the angle wrong, I was just going from memory. My long range rifles are generally .45-90's and my sight settings are a lot lower than that.

With my Shiloh Sharps .45-90 with an MVA 28" scope I use 0.21" at 300 yards near sea level, and have used between 0.705" to .740" at 1000 yards in Byers Colorado ( 5000+ ft above sea level ). That is 99 to 106 minutes up from 300 yards depending on wind conditions. They often have super strong head/tail winds so lots of variation.

With my Borchardt .45-90 with a 23" MVA scope I use about 0.011" at 200 yards near sea level, and 0.380" at Phoenix 1000 yards ( not sure of the elevation, but lower than Colorado by a fair bit ). That's 123 minutes from 200m to 1000 yards.

With both rifles I use a BACO 458535m1 bullet at around 1340 fps.

What's "long range" to you?

Even at "Trapdoor" pressure levels, you can find great accuracy at some very long ranges, up to and including 1000 yds. Generally the longer the range the heavier you'll want to go and I use the 535 gr "Postell" in my 45-90. There are yards of drop, but once it's sighted in, it's very consistent, and slow enough that in the right light you can watch its flight.

No crimp. Just remove the bevel made to insert bullet with a taper crimp die.
And if that Chiappa barrel twist is like the Perdosoli, it’s not for 300 grain bullet. 400 and more.
You are most likely disappointed with the 300. In a Sharp, you shoot lead bullet of medium hardness. Diameter is important. Some shoot good with .458, some prefer .459 and even .460.
For smokeless 5744 , H4198 give good result.

H-4198 will also work well with heavier bullets. I've shot quite a few 485gr bullets with H-4198 with magnum primers. I don't shoot much smokeless powder but when I do, that's the one I use. With 350gr bullets IMR-4227 can work very well as long as you are shooting light loads.
