Does anyone know if it is safe to shoot hot 45/70 loads in a NEF single shot?

No. The break action design is not as strong as a falling block design. Reloading manuals list three different load categories for 45-70 loads. I'd stick with the low or mid-level loads - 1500 FPS with 400 grain bullets.

Buy the Ruger #1 on the EE and shoot as hot a load as you can stand.

I have an NEF in 45/70.. hotter loads will pop the action open on its own. There was some threads about the action latch on some needing to be inspected and modified as they werent quite done right from the factory.
