Why are so many people selling their Marlin 45/70 Guide Guns in the exchange?

Is there a problem with them or is it just a coincidence?

My friend has one and its fantastic.

Maybe every one has woken up and realized that they have a trajectory akin to an old man with a swolen prostate having a wiz.:nest::stirthepot2::D:popCorn:

the trajectory doesnt matter when your only shooting 100 yards or less
I got mine for a bear stopper to keep on my saddle
I think people are just getting bored and they kick pretty good so maybe they dont get shot alot

It is a type of hunting and shooting that a person has to enjoy .... like bowhunting, or muzzle loaders. I'm not a fan of scopes and uber-mags. I like iron sights and ancient Winchester cartridges. I've got two old 45-70's and wouldn't be without one.

And unloading them high too.

This thread peaked my interest so I looked at them and then looked at SIR and saw a 45-70 Guide Gun (pic was ss but I am sure it is blued) for $551

Are any of the EE ads under $551?

For no other good reason other than to be different, I think I woudl like a 444.

Never got much use out of mine yet, it got stolen last summer and was returned to me ridden hard an put away wet....Got it totally refinished and i hope get some good use out it this year.

It seems everybody rushed out and got one and then starting dumping them after, I guess its like anything new, they wanna see what the hype was all about, not sure what they were expecting ? a 400gr bullet travelling at 3100fps ?

definitely a fad. Eventually, folks start to realize that they're not for everyone and actually occupy a rather small niche.

Hey man...it's what we (some of us) do!!! We buy em', shoot em' a few times and sell em' Then buy some more! :D

I had some of the same thoughts expressed but I wasn't sure what was going on. I really like this rifle and I was hoping to get one but I was worried that something was wrong that I, or my friends that has one, didn't notice yet.

I agree.. some of the prices are rediculous on the EE but... I guess if you're not going to do your homework before you buy something then its your own fault.

I don't believe it's a fad at all - if it is it's getting to be about 120 years old and still running. The increase of Guide guns for sale is probably because as the caliber's popularity is on the uprise, and the ability to load for the .45-70 is being recognized, more longer barreled versions are replacing the guide guns. With a right proper heavy load the Guide gun can be shocking to shoot, a pounding 70 ft/lbs with agressive barrel lift. Truth is, what other caliber on earth can be a hoot to shoot at gophers with open sights at subsonic speeds (kicks like a .22 at those loads) be turned around and loaded to flatten the biggest bears, Cape Buffalo, rhino, whatever, in their tracks. Once you've played with the lever guns, there's no going back. I have a lot of great modern rifles, but I sure do love my XLR .45-70. The guide guns are designed as short range dispatchers - great choice in tight quarters at close range. When needed, you won't notice the recoil and whatever you hit will most certainly have a change of opinion about where it wants to be! After all, with the right load you're very close to approaching the effective power of the .458 Win Mag, one of the most powerful and effective dangerous game calibers ever invented.

I agree with the last poster about the utility of the 45/70, he sounds like a true believer, alot of folks jumped on the bandwagon and fell off of it due to heavy recoil. Alot of folks wanted the heaviest/hardest/flattest cast bullets and loads to push them as fast as possible, the end result is alot of unneeded recoil and pain. Those that matched the bullet to the game hunted and loaded them to 1600fps. are probably still enjoying the old cartridge, I know I am!

I liked mine but found even when hunting 'Timber', there was posibilites of longer shots, such as along marshes or accross cut blocks. Shots longer than I would have felt comfortable with a lever 45-70. This and the fact that hunting opportunities for myself are lessening, made me decide that a flatter cartridge like a 30-06 or better would help me take advantage of any opportunity I would be lucky to have presented to me, reducing limitations.

I think its just a function of lots of guide guns being out there. And consequently a certain percentage will be sold/traded.

How many Remmy 700s are for sale? Lots. Not because they are necessarily bad rifles, just that there's lots of them out there so all things being equal quite a few will come up for sale. :)
