I might like to handle a blued/laminate 1895 just to compare but the GBL has been dropped - not shown in the 2017 catalog. :eek:

...the elegant straight stock and curved buttplate of the B-78 has always been enticing... so when I had the chance, I added one to the stable;

Well, hoyt, ya did it again. I've had one of these for many years, and as recently as 5 years ago I rolled my eyes when I saw one scoped and thought "I'll sell it before I ever do that!"...but now, I just can't seem to use even peep sights the way that I once did, and scoping my B78 doesn't seem like such sacrilege anymore. Mind you, it still doesn't look right with a scope on it...but I guess shooting it is more fun than just looking at it. :)

Out of curiosity: did you put a matte-finish scope on there because you happened to have one, or do you prefer that look? I see a lot of gloss-finished rifles wearing matte-finish scopes and find it a little jarring. This is one instance where, IMHO, a nice shiny Leupold belongs on a nice shiny rifle...no?

I generally don't like gloss scopes... and I had this matte scope on hand, but I agree, there is a time and place for a gloss scope, and perched on this B-78 would have been one of those times... but I certainly don't find the matte finish to be "jarring" in the least... it would just refine the look a smidge twer it gloss.

Better?

Actually, yes...much! :)

...although...the straight tube looked better than the belled objective...:)

Oh jeez... there's no pleasing you...

This one is just temporary, until I can find a gloss VX-III 1.75-6X32 or 2.5-8X36.

Ah, yes, one of my favourite parlor games: Musical Scopes. :)

All kidding aside, watch out for your mounting length. Just looking at your pictures makes it obvious that a couple of my nice short little scopes won't fit on that gun. Honestly, I don't know how people get by without at least a couple dozen guns to swap their scopes around on...:)

All fine and dandy, but what I would like to know is - is the 45-70 enough gun for big bears? Would you need a repeater, or would you be better off with a bigger gun like the 458 WM or Lott? How heavy a bullet would I need to stop a determined bear (say wounded, or defending its turf?)

The problem "isn't" and "is" swapping scopes... the outcome is many, many rigs that need to get to the range to be sighted in.

I have an 1895GS and love it (after changing the trigger and sites). Still want a GBL or a larger loop for the GS... My mitts just don't fit in this thing and I've had to modify my grip/cycling style to go outside the loop and keep only the tips of the fingers on it... Can't recall who posted a video showing that style for speed shooting a lever, but that's the only way I can comfortably shoot it.

The front base can be reversed... which may be necessary for the 1.75-6... this scope was actually made in two different tube lengths, originally it started off quite short, but Leupold received a lot of complaints about the scope not fitting on many actions, so at some point, they switched to a longer tube.

I love my SBL. It looks a little more modern, but I actually really like the laminate stock. First thing I did was take out the cross bolt safety. I kept bumping it on without realising it, and it is a hammer block and nothing is worse than having a click when you're supposed to get a bang (especially if you are face to face with a bear). Replace it with a saddle ring, and it looks great
