Hey fellas, I'm loving shooting 405g casts from bullet barn in my Marlin Guide Gun, cheap and accurate, but now that I'm trying to site it in for deer I'm having trouble. My GG has a peep sight and with the sight adjusted right to the top, it will just group 300g Coreloks at 80y, but the 405's, moving at about 1700 fps are hitting 20" lower. The 300's are moving at about 2100fps and that's fine, but I'd love to try hunting with the cast bullets. Does everyone else' 45-70 hit that low with that weight bullet? What sights do use with them?

I filed the top knob (round part) off the front sight on my XLR, and gave it a 45 degree angle and problem solved. Now my rear sight is in the second lowest groove.
PM if you want details!

I have a 1895GG ported, and i am using winchester 300 HPs and remmington 405 sp. with a bushnel 1.25-4.5 scope. ammazing both have a POI within 1.5" of each other at 100yds, maybe i got lucky

You need a lower front sight. The formula to find the correction is:

correction needed (ON target) X sight Radius divided by Range. Use inches for everything including range and remember to center your rear sight elevation before you start.

I am always trying diff. weight bullets in my Marlin leverguns they are usually heavy for caliber, say 325gr. in the .44 and 480 or so in the 45/70. The sights(usually Williams Peeps) do not usually have enough adjustment.....my remedy is simple......i usually have an assortment of fibre optic front sights in diff. heights. These are the dovetail type(3/8") that match Marlins and by swapping diff. heights I can use the rear sight with any bullet weight.

Thats funny out of my 1895g the 300hps are deadly accurate @ 100yds and the remmy 405 sp are about 7 to 8" lower, that is with stock open sights.

I was having problems with a guide gun with it shooting low. Using the remington 405 all purpose factory loads it shot good. Using my reloads with rems 405, the faster the velocity was the lower the bullet striked the target. This was with factory sights on the rifle. Currently using the XS ghost ring and have it set fairly high to get it to shoot properly now with a load of around 1600fps. Any suggestions as I might want to push the load a little faster.

There will be no set standard difference in the way different guns throw 300 or 405's. Barrel harmonics will sometimes cause a heavier bullet to strike higher. Same thing helps explain why one poster has a lower point of impact when the velocity increased.

405's for deer

I would love to use the 405's for deer, that's actually what I'm trying to do, but the POI is so low that I can't get them zeroed much past 30y...I need a lower front sight.

Is there much difference when using the regular 1895 (22in barrel) compared to the guide version(18.5 barrel) ???

In a 2007 issue of Reloader Magazine, a writer tested the three varieties of Marlin rifles with a tremendous number of bullet weights and loads. There was actually only fairly minor change in velocities with the shorter barrel.
I have a 1 to 4 power Redfield on my 22 inch Marlin 45-70 and I find the loads are very predictable. That is, the lower powered loads shoot lower, at 100 metres, than the heavier loads. With 420 grain bullets the lightest, with a velocity of maybe 1200 fps, will shoot about ten inches lower than the bullets starting out at about 1800 fps. Medium powered loads shoot between the two loads described.
