Gentlemen:
I put 53 grains of 3031 behind a 500 grain cast bullet, and get about 1700 fps. It is a very low pressure load. I shoot this in a mauser. I wonder if anyone has any idea of any 45000 psi plus loads, and what they achieve in terms of energy.
 
I'll tread very lightly here as the following info is just that, info, and are loads that were tested in a "prepared" Ruger #1(Throated) and should not be tried or used in any other way. The 500grain Hornady went 2210 fps for 4924 ft-lbs energy and 52,400cup. In more recent testing(piezo) a 500 gr. bullet, with a diff. load produced 2024 fps, 61,700psi and 4138ft.-lbs. energy. I must again warn that these velocities are not to be tried in any other 45/70 and are shown for comparison purposes.
 
I shoot 500 cast up to 1950fps in a Siameze Mauser.
You won't get up to that velocity with 3031, just not enough room in the case.
4198 is the powder of choice for me.
I don't know how you could get enough 4198 in a case to attain 2200fps, even seating the bullet out as far as you could with a Ruger #1, nor would I try. 2000fps hurts quite enough thank you.
 
Thank you gentlemen, you confirmed my thought that 3031 was too slow to achieve the potential of the cartridge, that being said, 1700 fps is a good load, the cases will last forever. I find the recoil sufficient at 1700. I have shot a moose with it at that velocity, and it did not notice that I could have had the extra 300 fps.

I guess this load makes a 458 winchester redundant.
 
My Hornady manual lists 45-70 loads for the trapdoor actions, the lever actions and the Ruger #1. The #1 loads are similar to Ben's above data and approach .458 Win Mag levels of power.
