I have already trimmed the brass down to account for the pointy bullet affecting my C.O.A.L.
going to be used in a marlin gg & a h & r buffalo classic.-I have read and proved for myself that the action strength is on par with the marlin. so medium loads .
pls specify what strength action the recipe is for - NO ruger # 1 loads pls. not realy interested in trap door loads either, just a starting point hunting load. I will develop it from there.

I wouldn't trim brass back to accommodate a certain bullet, however I don't think that this bullet would be best at "higher then factory velocity".....Lyman shows max. for 330 gr. 55 grs. RL-7 for 2096fps(max. for the Marlin)...for the Ruger #1 they show 57grs. Rl-7 for 2200fps.....If I were wanting heavy loads in the 45/70, i wouldn't shorten the cases and would use a much heavier Flat Point bullet with widest meplat avail..IMHO....

thx for the info on the 330 gr.
I have a lot of brass on hand for the my 45/70 's so not to worried about trimming a few for this experiment.I normaly shoot 405 gr. flat point with good accuracey @ 100 yards but wanted to try a bit flatter trajectory load.I have read very good things about the 325 evol. and I have a 18" + a 32" barrel to try (guide gun & buff. classic) .to be honest I'm a bit bored & already have all my loads done for my other rifles.

The Hornady site has suggested loads and directions for the FTX bullet. I tried conventional loads for their 200 gr in my 356 and they were MUCH too hot. I don't know about the 45 cal, but the 35 has mucl more surface contact with the barrel thus higher pressure/resistance. Once I followed their loads everything went much smoother.

Speaking of which Ben, do you anticipate having some 480 WFNs soon?

I have a Marlin GS (45-70) for which I've done some load development over the last year.
Contacting Marlin, i was informed the rifling and testing was based on the 405 grain jacketed flat point.
I was more interested in developing accuracy than a hard hitting moving locomotive ( for that I have a Ruger #1). My load by no means comes close to max pressures, but will drill a perfect hole through 1/4" steel plate at 100 meters. I dont hunt, but I'm told it will go length wise through a bear ending any confrontation. For my jacketed rounds, in my rifle, I'm loading 400gr Speer with 40.0 gr. of IMR 4198. This gives me 3/4" group @50 yards. Dont think I can do better for this round and firearm.

I've bought some cast bullets from Ben. If you want a killer of a round try his hard 500 grain FP for 45-70. I'm using this in both Marlin, Ruger and my 458 Win Mag. Outstanding. Groups are similar with IMR 3031, hitting 1/2" lower than the above load, but just remember - this one kills from both ends of the rifle.
