So I’m down to my last handful of Woodleigh 405s, and who knows how they’ll take to start producing my them again after the fire.

For all the 45/70 moose, deer and bear hunters out there, wondering what projectile you’re using and how they perform on game.

I don’t want to use cast, and I really don’t want to use FTX stuff. Looking for a jacketed 350-405gr bullet.

Recommendations?

Winchester 1886 SR - new production.

350gr RN from hornady. #200-4502. I use them in my 1886. Very accurate and deadly. Shot a moose with it at 150yards. Ended up hitting a little lower than expected and went through both front leg bones on each side bullet exited and moose dropped on the spot. Exit wound was double the size of entrance and you could eat right up to the bullet hole.

Thanks for the replies. I’m also leaning toward the Barnes. Nobody using the Sierras eh?

I have used the Speer #2478 in my Ruger No.1-S rifles, and they were very accurate, but the flat meplat would not feed properly in my M77 Mark II .450 Marlin, I was forced to file them into RN's, so just switched to the #4502 to save time... they are slightly less accurate, but are still easily inside 2" @ 100 yards and this is a close range bear rifle, so that is plenty good enough... at 25 yards I can shoot a nickel with every shot. The Speers would do MOA consistently.

Curiously, why no cast?
I've has real good luck with the hornady 350 round noses. Currently I have a bunch of different brands/types, all the way from 300 barnes tsx, 350 gr to 535 gr cast, with a bunch of 400ish grain jacketed in there as well.
I would restrict the jacketed 300's for deer sized game.
They all work. Pick one.

No particular reason. I’ve used them in the past in a couple of my 45-70s for plinking.

I’ve settled on the Barnes I think.
