So i recently picked up, a new to me 45-70 handi rifle. Came with sights, but i am looking at putting a red dot or holo sight on it. The gun is a $200 range item, the scope will not be a $500 item, for S&G lets set the limit at $300.

So i am looking for a tough yet inexpensive red dot or holo sight that will stand up to the recoil of 45-70. I will use the gun in backpacks, a truck gun, and in salt water marine.

I know, i expect too much. Gun is going to live rough, scope must also. Thick coastal alder and 100 yard max and defense shots only, so large magnification is not needed.

Thoughts and suggestions please.

Vortex Sparc II
Lifetime VIP transferable warranty.....you break it they send you another one.
No receipt required.

I'd go red dot. More durable then a halo

Personally a set of quality peep sights would be a better option. No batteries and can take a lot of abuse

Reread the OP's first post, he desires an optic for defensive shooting at 100 yards or less, peep sights are slow and don't work in low light.

Yes the gun is a Handi rifle, and i have a zippered soft case for a survival rifle it fits in. The gun is going to get stowed away in the boat, stuffed in the big compartment of the pack, and live behind the seat of the truck.

Use is for walking into fishing spots, against 4 legged fishermen, and in the super tight Blacktail spots on the coast. Super unlikely i would see a Blacktail further than 100 yards as everything is so thick, and i have no reason to shoot a bear at any real distance...so only see the whites of their eyes range.

Seems that the Vortex sparc is the available optic here. Could not find anyone with the Burris. Not sure about the Bushnell and recoil, and the rest are Chicoms like Nc star...no thanks.

The rifle actually has pretty nice sights, i would like to leave them on co - witnessed, and for redundancy. The Vortex with its three mounts included looks like the one for finding the sight height to co - witness. Since my vision is not what it was, the peeps do not appeal, that is the purpose of a red dot....quick and accurate...i don't think i would be either with a peep.

My sparc had no issues with the case of 12 gauge slugs i hammered it with.
Trs-25 is a good sight as well, especially for the money. I have one on an sks and I like it a lot.
Fwiw My fastfire 3 is in Colorado at the warranty center.

You may want to look into battery life. I can't remember but I think the sparc is a couple hundred hours while the trs25 is 10000

I think i have narrowed it down to the Vortex Sparc II, perhaps the TRS if i get a awesome deal. I have some Vortex optics and really like the quality, clarity, and warranty at the price. At this point i have some items on the EE's that may fund the purchase, not in a great hurry since Vortex seems to never have sales. Full retail is always available.

...i read your requirements and agree that a lighted sight on your 45-70 handi will be awesome for what you want...think a tube is stronger, but for me a reflex is faster...and i apologize but i just had to post my custom work on one of my 45-70's (handi) that is lightening fast for me...a peep...but in your case a good reflex is least cumbersome, lighted, and picturewindow-wide when it comes to seeing what's out there and coming at you...a reflex should be on a scout rifle in my book...
