I bought a lb bottle of this powder not realizing it isn't the same powder used in the lever gun ftx factory ammo,I think it's a bit of false advertising ,but now I'm stuck with this powder and I don't reload for the calibers its recommende for so I started low and made up 20 rounds of 45/70 using 325 grain ftx bullets, hornady lever gun brass, winchester large rifle primer and 44 grains lever powder is what I finally came up with as a very nice shooting ,low recoil, and quite accurate load.

I know this powder is not recommended, but I thought I would give it a try.Everything seems to be ok except that it seems like a very dirty powder ,my brass is black when ejected lol.prob due to wrong burn rate for this cal.

I like reloader 7 and h322. Much better but I can't waste a lb of powder .

bk; Leverevolution powder is way too slow burning for a straight walled case like your 45-70
It is similar in burn rate to the 4895s
Jethunter has already made the valid observation. Dave.

That sooty-black residue on your brass is usually caused by not enough pressure (powder too slow for the bullet weight). It can also be caused by a poor seal because of grease/cleaner/oil in the chamber. Chamber should be clean and completely dry.

Out of curiosity, are you using Hornady's short brass or standard-length brass for that FTX bullet? Using the correct brass (shorter Hornady brass) will increase the pressures and may solve your issue. Just a thought.

Yes,I'm using the correct shorter Hornady brass specific to the levergun ammo, and htx 325 grain bullet .The gun is cleaned after each range session and I suspect it's just as others stated, wrong powder for the cartridge. Its still fun to plink with at the range ,but requires more clean up,for sure.

Yes,I believe you are right, not the right powder for the cartridge at all,Definately a slower burn ,I will stick with the h322 and reloader 7.

Good idea. 4198 will also do you well. At 405 gn bullet weights, I start to look to 3031.
If you've got a 223, 308, or 30-06, you may be able to consume your Leverevolution there.

If the accuracy is good and you clean the rifle bore and chamber regularly I see no compelling safety reason to not use that powder. Yes, there are better choices but if you can get decent results from a powder you won't otherwise use, then why not.
