I read somewhere that the recoil is actually tamer than smaller 45 magnums like the 454Casull?

I'm kinda surprised that his plate rack survived...

Well, the S&W 500 shoots a 400grain bullet around 1800 fps, so it certainly would recoil more.

The 454 casull pushs a 400 grain at 1400. Which is probably not too far off what the 45-70 does from a revolver - unless hes doing black powder equivalent load, at which point the 454 would certainly recoil more as well.

I am the last person to take anything away from Jerry. He is truly the shooting meister!

He mentions his handload at 900 fps with a 405 gr with his first load and another 415 gr at an unmentioned velocity. (maybe at around 1100-1200 fps??)

I got to stop watching Jerry and Hickok 45 videos. I keep buying more of the things I see. Those guys are great. I wish I could shoot like them

I think you are right. Sort of like the D'eagle - you have to do it once.

Plus my pistol range would not allow it

Oh, I could get weak for a similar 45-70 handgun! Jerry's handloads here do not appear to be all that punishing IMO.

Seems like a reasonable step up from the 44 Magnum.

Of course it could have something to do with the siren song of three 45-70 long guns and one 45 wildcat rifle under my roof.

I shot one earlier this year. Recoil was stout but manageable in the BFR but I didn't try to one hand it. And yes, I was grinning ear to ear. That is a factory round and not a reduced velocity handload.

It was a red-dot but I don't recall the make/model. I know that C-More Systems makes red-dots sights.
