45/70 shot shells
I shoot a #3 Ruger and Browning 78 single shot in 45/70 and a .444 Marlin levergun and load shot shells to shoot in all three.
To make 45/70 shot shells all you need to start is to decide as to what you'll use for over powder wad and over shot cap. Some people use cardboard or styrofoam from meat trays "cookie cut" by useing one of your cases with rim champhered sharp to "punch out" the cookies.
I cast bullets so I prefer to use .458 gas checks instead...add powder charge of choice, seat gas check over powder (cup facing up) ...fill case to just below the top of the rim with shot...seat gas check (cup down )...then roll crimp to hold gas check and shot column in place.
A standard Remington 410 shell is about 1140 fpsecond according to an IMR/Dupont manual.
An empty 45/70 case holds about 480 grains of 7 1/2 shot.... After adding powder and over powder wad/card/cup.. fill case to just below rim with shot of your choice...weigh the shot and use an appropriate pistol/shotgun powder to move the now weighed shot charge of say 350 +/-grains about 1000 +/- fps in a 45/70.
I use 10.0 grains of "Unique Powder" to fire a 500 grain Lee cast bullet at 1050 fps as one of my plinker loads, so any projectile under 500 grains is "safe in my gun" using this powder charge. So I used Unique to make my shot shells and have been doing so for about 10 years now.
The same method has proved just as successful in my .444 and other straight wall cases with appropriate /corresponding powder charges and are meant to be shot in RIFLES only...
YMMV......hs45/70
