Well finally I found the one I wanted. So.... anybody out there with experience in loading for this guy. Siamese 45.70 26" Douglas Air gauge Timney trigger all sitting in a Stewart Reid stk. So far just shot some Remington 300's and they went nicely into 3/4" groups, but we all know we can getter up to some decent velocities. I'm thinkin 400 gr Horndy's, but let me know what your thoughts are.
 
I load for a Ruger #3 in .45-70 and the Speer manual say it's "hot" loads are suitable only for Ruger's and Siamese Mausers. The speer data is the hottest I've encountered by far. I have had good success using Speer 350 grain hot core bullets with Alliant RL-7 (bear, moose and deer). I have used 300 gr hollowpoints but at the elevated speeds of the hot loads they fragment excessively on game larger than deer. I'd be really curious to here what kind of performance you get out of that 26" barrel, I think you could easily get close to .458 Win Mag of even slightly better. Recoil is gonna be stiff!
 
Ackley, do a search on my posts and you will find a long informed article on loading 458 American.
(basically a rimmed 45-70 using a 2 inch H&H magnum case)
The powders and loads for these Mauser actioned rifles are THE same.

PS Depending on barrel twist I believe you will be very happy with the ability of 400/405 grain bullets to group very nicely at 100 yards....

Also if you do not intend to cast/shoot lead bullets, 405 grain Remington copper jacketed soft points are very cheap and accurate out of most 45-70 barrels. Not a first choice for grizzlies, but just about anything else in North America it can easily punch through.

Shoot a #3 ruger also.......and as stated ,your Siamese can digest anything up to any Max load in any Manual...

400 speer in Ruger

57.0 gr Reloader #7.........2019 ,2045,2067 fps.......(62.0 was max in this manual).
60.0 gr Imr 4895.......1835,1854,1857....fps

58.0 gr. Imr 3031........1888 fps....60.0 is max at 2000fps
1.5 inch at100 yds and less for these loads....

405 gr winchester.....ruger

57.0 Reloader 7......2102, 2140,2121 fps ...3 shots 1.0 in./100yds (62.0gr max in this manual)

..........no doubt with your rifle higher velocity/accuracy is easily attainable....

350 Hornady is easily taken to 2250 fps with accuracy also and has gone the full length through 5 foot black bear at 20 yards .....into the chest and out the ham.....no recovery......instantly dropped into the "rug position".....

Thanks guys. I'm gonna have at er again this weekend. I've shot several 47.70's before and I was waiting for the right one at the right price to come along. I had a freinds Marlin for a while a few years ago and had a hoot with it including one Bear. I'd still buy a Marlin if one came up. I have a thing about a straight grip stock and the only ones I've seen for several years have been pistol gripped. ...and yes I know 'bout the guide rifle and I see they've finally got around to producing it without a brake, which in my opinnion is the way they should have done it in the first place. The Cowboy action rifle has got my attention several times, but sort of takes away from the handiness of a lever gun. That being said I still may have to have one. Thanks again for the advise guys. I'll let you know how things turn out. Methinks with that 26" tube we should see some interesting results.
 
I have a Siamese with a 1" x 25" hex barrel :) Timney, Fajen stock!
She weighs in at 12lbs & needs it :D
Biggest drawback to any loading I have come across is getting enough powder in that tiny little case :D for that reason I have eliminated almost all powders but 4198 so far!
I like Remy 405 bullets, I haven't shot anything with them but they sure shoot best in my gun.
The 300HP are nothin more than varmint rounds in the level of power this calibe is capable of! I would NOT recommend you shoot anything you plan to eat with it, not only does the bullet blow up but the game does too:eek:

If I were to consider carrying it for big game I would consider using the tough 350 Horns although at any range over 100yds I think the 405 Remi's might? hold together enough :)

Enjoy :) Keep range rounds to a minimum as flinches are hard to get over! Don't ask me how I know :confused: I used to shoot the #3 Ruger :runaway:
 
Load that rifle right and it's quite up to the Asiatic water buffalo we have up north here in Australia........all 1500kgs!!
If you are interested in having some fun try the 500gn Speer African Grand Slam Tungsten Solids.
There are loads for it and the recoil will be, well, brisk to say the least but that would be an ideal dangerous game setup.
Incidentally, how many rounds will they take in the mag?
