Baikal is saying they are bringing in the redesigned double. The prob with preasure is fixed (?????). If so I may have to try one. They will retail for aprox. $1200-1400. I think my Marlin lever may find a new home:). Now if they would only bring in the 9.3x74r. New toys I don't need but want. As bad as my kids:redface: Not sure if & when they will come in. Let me know if you see any in stock anywhere. (new modle not the old) AJ

I have absolutely no interest in a 45-70 double the limitation of only 2 rounds just doesn't work for me and their is no way that the accuracy can be anywhere as good as my Marlin 1895GS...

I never understood the problem in the first place, pressure problems? Are their guns(doubles) not already chambered for the 30/06 which produces double the pressure of the 45/70? Or was it a case of just not enough metal around chamber/barrel, that kind of thing is not rocket science, even in collective farming Russia. I agree with another poster, I'll stick with my Marlin, alot of things I see and hear about Russian guns doesn't sit right with me.

Pressure problems with the 30.06 SxS???

I have had issues with mine, but Baikal doesn't even acknowledge my correspondence, and the dealer I bought it from is out of business.

With mine, the primers flow back into the firing pin holes so that you can't hardly open it. The headspace (which can't be adjusted) is a little big, the chamber is a little baggy, but the bore is very tight.

My gunsmith has tried to polish the bore to relieve some pressure, and we have experimented with different loads. Light, reduced loads seem okay, but then you lose the benefit of an '06.

We have now fire-formed brass, and loaded normal 30.06 loads, similar to factory, and we seem to have the problem solved. But talk about a lot of work.

Has anyone else had this issue, and if so what did you do?

Thanks
JB

What is it they say about doubles "twice the number of barrels, half the strength, and ten times the price". But it is very cool and tempting.

I'm wondering. If you opened it up to 45/90 and gave it a long throat would it be able to equal 458 win? I also remember reading that regulating doubles was a pita. Would it hit anything?

Make mine a .458......Lott. At that price I'd take a bunch.

You could do that as well, but I am not sure it would take the pressure! the hindge is weak on these from what I understand, so it may get sloppy quick..

A 45-120 is low PSI with BP 27000 at most and velocity that rivals the 450 express!!!

A 450 Nitro Express runs low PSI as well this could be an option.

I just might do this!

This has been argued to death on other forums re double rifles -- what 45-70 load can this rifle handle??? Full Ruger loads ? or Springfield ie factory 45-70 loads?

I expect that there just will not be enough metal to in the bbl to play much with these.

I have one in 30-06 and like it quite well - but you cannot overload it at all. It will bind up. No different from many doubles in that respect.

In my Baikel 06 - I use 180 gr RN seated out as far as possible and 1/2 gr of WW 760 powder less then my normal go-to 30-06 load and CCI 250 primers. The rifle works great at that point - but a little more powder and it starts to bind, mainly I believe due to primer cratering / flow back that of course hinders the opening.

Perhaps if you used the hardest primers available (ala a semi-auto rifle) it may prevent the primer crater -- something I must try - or bush the firing pin holes to a tighter tolerance..
