45-70 vs. 375H&H for up close

GH/SC what was the muzzle velocity of your 260gr loads.

The reason I am asking is I am working on a new 260gr Accubond load for my 21" barreled T/C Contender carbine that was a 375 Win that I just had rechambered to 375JDJ.

I am getting 2300fps with 250gr Sierra Gamekings but the Bulletsmith's tell me that the jacket is to tough to mushroom below 1900fps which would limit me to only 200 yard shots.

I have heard that the bonding process uses heat resulting in a bullet that is softer so it will mushroom at a far slower velocity and if I can safely push the 260gr Accubond to 2300 + fps it will still be doing over 1800fps @ 300 yards.

My ballistic calculator tells me if I sight in 2" high @ 100 yards this .473 BC bullet will be 2.5" low at 200 yards and only 15" low at 300yards where it is still doing 1800fps resulting in appr 1900ft lbs of energy.

I'm thinking of using this rifle/cartridge/bullet combo for my grizzly hunt this spring... :)

My 375 Ruger loves the 260 Accubonds as well. I had similar bullet performance to the first one is SC picture. I shot a black bear this fall head on and the bullet smashed thru about 12 inches of neck and bone. I recovered the bullet in the meat and it had opened all the way to the base and weighed 139 grains...

Two weeks later I shot a mulie quartering away from me and the Accubond blew thru the ribs and tore apart the opposite shoulder and exited. The deer took a few steps and tipped over...

I wouldn't say the Accubond failed for me with the bear I was just suprised that it peeled open the way it did and shed so much weight. I am still using these as my primary hunting bullet. More testing required...

If you guys don't have a ballistic calculator to play with try this one out it works...

FYI the BC for the 260gr Accubond's is .473

I'll use one for getting a rough idea of POI at various ranges, then I go out and verify them, and record MOA compensations required. Usually the calculators are pretty darn close, actually. Not always, but I expect this has to do with a discrepancy between actual and stated BC:p

Recovered weight 196.1 gr

I shot at about 25 yards.

I actually took the time to read through that....Sorry I did...There were some real idiots around at that time.

I am wondering if the reason that I recovered the 270gr TSX bullets from the broadside moose is related to the catchers mitt effect of the skin?? Perhaps the large round expanded shape of the TSX is conducive to being stopped in the fur and I am prematurely judging the bullet????

Bear season is coming and perhaps I will give the 270gr TSX another chance.....Time to put the lights out on another blackie!

And yes, the Bartel beast looks tasty! :D

Just for the record my 22" Stainless Classic shoots the 260 AB and 270 TSX very well. Both with the same load, 73.5 Rel 15. The AB goes 2790 fps, I would assume the TSX is going slower but haven't chronoed it yet. I'm shooting TSXs in everything now but haven't shot anything with the 375 version yet. Have a couple freinds that want to go out for Bear this spring so who knows.

Totally agree with that... :)

I'd like to try out the TSX on a quartering towards shot on a decent sized bear. They dont always give you the option of shot placement, but I will try anyway. Seems like the best way to get the longest distance out of a bear!:)

We are running low on dog food, so The Girl has ordered me to shoot a black bear ASAP!:)

I like a bullet to exit, too, but I can't complain too much if it penetrates all the way and then gets hung up on the skin- As long as the animal goes down fast.
