45- 70

I still have 3 of that caliber. nfs

I'm down to two. I had a Marlin 1895GS that I gave to my Son who was living at ;) Horsefly in the B.C. central interior at the time. I replaced it with a Marlin 1895GBL and I prefer the pistol grip style of it vs the straight stock of the GS. The other I have is a Magnum Research BFR. Now there's a handful.

It is more versatile than most people think. From 250g to 500g and mild to wild for recoil. Trajectory isn’t that bad to 300 but that is dependant on the load. This is probably good for 80% of the hunting that most people do

A 12 gauge slug compared to a hot rod load in a 45-70 are not even in the same ballpark.

Yer right on that. The basic foster type slugs don't pack the mail near as well as a proper, full bore bullet. The 12 bore rifles are decidedly better on big critters inside 100 yds with big lead though.;)

Yes, the 835 gr bombs are loaded into 3 " 12 ga hulls and they be held in place with a roll crimp. I load em to 1100 fps without pressure worries.
Recoil be there, but no worse than standard 1 7/8 oz shot loads from my 870.;)

The 45-70 isn't meant to be hot rodded. A 430 grain hardcast bullet poking along at 1400 will blow a hole through an elephants ass. It's meant to lob big, heavy, bullets at mediocre velocities and achieve maximum knock down power. If you need anything more than that, you've chosen the wrong caliber.

Gents; Now that I'm back in the 45-70 game with a Henry H010, I need some reloading advice. I'm not yet setup for reloading, but plan to be before spring bear hunt. As for powders, all I have currently is a whack of Trail Boss. I imagine a case full of that topped with a 405 grain hardcast would be pretty potent. Powders are getting hard to come by it seems. What do you recommend? Also, where can I find cast boolits?

Budget reloading supply is the place for bullets. 13g trailboss under a 405g cast bullet is the way to go.

i reload a bit for 45-70's and trailboss is awesome. nothing like ringing gongs at 200 with a few sec delay. i use full case for 350gr berrys. someplace close to 15g. but of course depends on case. best accuracy for both my marlin gg and win1886. use imr4198 for hotter cast and jacketed loads. Just remember that Hornady brass is shorter than standard 45-70 brass to accommodate the 325 ftx rounds to cycle properly. i use the Hornady die set and it works for everything.

I’ve not used trail boss. My go to is 3031 behind cast 405, marlin was 46gr, Ruger #3 50gr and same or 52 in Browning 78. These are hunting loads. The Ruger can handle more but it lots for me.

Single Shot 45-70's

Don't have a lever 45-70 but I do have a bunch of reproduction and one antique single shot rifles - I cast my own bullets (405g and 500g) and reload with black powder or Triple7 depending on the rifle. I just got a 1859 Sharps .52 Caliber percussion rifle so I'll be making paper cartridges for it.

I cast the 412gr powdercoat bullets, someone else took the shots.

I have tried the same load at 48gr im3031 and i can get 1" at 50 yards, from bench with scope using Henry with 22" barrel.

Imr3031 is still available at decent price from higginson.
