You may however find yourself a shooting buddy, who reloads, that will teach you how to make 45/70 rounds after he sees that you are not some kind of yahoo.

I would never reload for anyone....the legalities are overwhelming to say the least. I have however aided a buddy to reload his own. I provided the equipment, he provided the parts and labour. Of course under my watchful eye.

Reloading for 45/70 is.. used to make a box or two at a time, now it's 100. Everything from 300-340gr cast at subsonic over unique or trail boss to 480-500gr at shoulder breaking ~1500-1600 ish.. I'd hunt polar bears with one of Ben's 480gr hard cast over 33-36gr of IMR 4198.. That's my load in my rifle, don't start there.
45/70 is a great cartridge to start reloading on.. It is fairly low pressure, the brass lasts well, and you will find yourself shooting a lot more. I would say get a lee anniversary kit, a scale and a manual. Something good to read when the internet is down.

I agree whole heartedly about Ben's 480 WFN, although I'm partial to 3031.
Another .45-70 fan here.
It's a great cartridge to reload with minimal effort.
My current favourite powder is Trail Boss, topped off with some dacron as filler.
If you are working up a load, with a minimum amount of brass, you can do it at the range with a Lee Hand Tool, dies, case lube, scale (most important IMHO) hand primer, primers, powder(s) and bullets.
If you're using new brass, remember to trim and de-burr it.

I use hercules 2400 powder, 24.5gr a dacron filler and a hrd cast 404gr hollow point gets 1400fps, very accurate also use that powder with a postel bullet 495gr, 27gr, 3 shots t 150yrds one ragged hole

The thing I like about 3031 in 45/70 is it's pretty much safe to make a 103% compressed load with that powder and any bullet, just a little on the warm recoil side. 50gr of 3031 behind a 400, 405 or 420 cast from Ben is one of my go to loads... I still like the 480's though.. flatter
not the trajectory of course, that's like a rainbow but my gun is open sights, so if I can see and hit it with open sights, it's probably going to have a hard time.
