As mentioned in my previous post, light and heavy load accuracy is great in my 500 S&W with a wide variety of cast bullets I obtain from a friend locally. They range in weight from 350gr to 440gr, gas checked and plain base.

Speaking specifically of my cast bullet use in the 45-70, here again, I have a decent variety. Some gas checked, some plain base and one bevel base, ranging in weight from 345gr to 530gr. As stated in my previous post, most of my cast bullet shooting in 45-70 I've religated to lighter loads primarily for use in a Pedersoli Sharps and usually for off hand practice.

The lighter loads have also performed well in my Marlin 1895GS but again for me, once I get to velocities in the 1300 - 1400 f/sec range, accuracy 'starts' to drop off. Not radically but noticeably, so, for top end loads in the Marlin, I go with the 405gr Remington and/or the Speer 400gr at around 1700 f/sec.

A hornady 350, & H4198, gives a 45-70 a whole different attitude!

But is this rifle built for those pressures?

45 grains of Reloader 7 and that bullet works well too.

My Speer book states 48gr to start with a speed of 1710 with RE7 a good cast bullet powder.

The slider on my browning does not lock in place. It is easily moved up and down the staff. I wouldn't consider 12 inches low minute of moose. Adjusting my aim likely would not work because I like using a variety of guns. Today I may take out a Browning model 95 tomorrow possibly a BLR and the day after that an old winchester 94. It would be easier to have each gun shooting point of aim than to remember this gun is 12 inches low that gun is 6 inches right etc. That said I increased the charge of 5744 to 28 grs. so if I can get home from work in the daylight I will try that and see where it puts me.
