yes i know Remington produces it it and probably Federal and Winchester as well. Le Baron's sells it , and Hornady recently introduced a soft spitzer than will work in levers. I'm pretty sure the big mail order places (such asSIR, Russells, Wholesale, Epps) carry it as well.

It is loaded fairly mild (405 grains at around 1300- 1400 FPS if I recall)because of all the weak trapdoors out there, in a modern rifle you can load it up to much higher levels. There are a couple companies such as Garrett? that sell a much stronger load for use in Marlin 1895's, Ruger singleshots, etc

If you want accuracy go with the mild loads. I have a remmington rolling block that I shoot with 500 grn lead and 24 grns XMP 5744 which gives a velocity of 1260 FPS. With this load it's the most accurate rifle I have ever owned.

I'm using 56 grains of Varget, the Speer 400 grain jacketed slug, and Winchester large rifle primers in Winchester cases. This load produces 1-inch groups at 100 yards, and develops 1790 fps at the muzzle in my Guide Gun.:)

virtually all "off the shelf" 45/70 ammo is loaded to trapdoor pressures. As far as punch a handloaded didley little 44 mag can pretty much keep up with a store bought 45/70
