Im looking at a 45-70 and was wondering what is the recoil, range, and avalibility of ammo are. I do not reload so that may be a problem. I was looking at a Marlin Classic Model 1895 so ya what do you think.

I've got the guide gun myself.

With stock Winchester 300gr ammo, recoil is quite manageable. More like a shotgun than a high powered rifle. I can go through 20 or 30 rounds plinking at the range. :D

Ammo has not been a problem to find for me.

As for range, it is one of the original long range cartridges! However, its trajectory is similar to that of a howitzer... ;)

According to Shoot! v3, With the 300 grain winchester ammo at 1880fps and a 150 meter zero:
50 meters 2.56 inches high
100 meters 3.18 inches high
120 meters 2.38 inches high
150 meters 0 inches
170 meters 2.51 inches low
200 meters 7.74 inches low
250 meters 20.79 inches low

For humours sake:
1000 meters 1332.97 inches low. :D

Marlin lever rifles in 444 or 45/70 are in high demand...

PS, Amphibious, your case of Lever Revolution 450 Marlin ammo is in, PM me :)

Any time you start a 300-500 grain slug downrange with enough force to blow holes in large game, you are going to be reminded that you just shot a rifle. A lot of guys use the 45-70 in the BPCR matches out to some pretty long ranges. Trajectory like a rainbow.

Just for fun, take a look at this DJ!
We have a lot of fun with big bullets WAAAY OUT there!:D

What is the best defence against a 45/70?
Posted by Yogi.

:p

I love it!!! First, there were many bear defence threads ..... then a grouse defence thread ..... now a 45/70 defence thread. :D I like the sig line of one of the guys here, that the 45/70 had the ballistic coeficient of an AA duracel.

Still and all, I love my 45/70 1885 single shot!!!
