45 70's most versatile hunting powder...

IMR 3031 for me as well. Now did you guys check the Hodgdon/IMR reloding web pages lately? They list a max load of 60 grains of IMR 3031 for Hornady 350 grainers in lever marlins... What do you think, too hot or safe?

Depends what you're shooting the loads out of. Even for a Ruger #1 or a strong bolt action, the load is on the maximum level. For the newer Marlins or older trap door vintage of actions & firearms, like crazy_davey said, too hot!!

While I prefer Reloader 7, H 4198 is excellent too, particularly in cold weather.
Here's a quote from Hogdon:
"H4198 This Extreme Extruded propellant has gone through some changes since its inception, all the time maintaining the same important burning speed of the past. The kernels were shortened for improved metering and necessary elements were added to make it extremely insensitive to hot/cold temperatures."

I use H4198 with cast 405gr flat base, also IMR 3031 with 405 cast and 350gr Horandy Flat Points. I use R7 with a 350gr cast gas check from a Saeco Mold this is what I'm hunting with this fall, already took a nice black bear with it. I find R7 and H4198 cleaner burning then 3031.

You're quite correct. I've experienced much the same results with some of the 'less than maximum' loads listed using IMR 3031. Accuracy didn't seem to be adversely affected but 'some' unburnt powder was evident.

Re-7 Tops.

For years i have had great results with RE-7 in old rifles from .32-20 thrue to .577 Snider. In my opinion this powder is ideal for all streight wall cases. .45-90
