45-90 Smokeless

One last question, I'm gonna have a short barrel on mine. What's a good powder for a short barrel? I guess it would have to burn a bit faster. Hodgdon doesn't seem to list the relative burning rate, I'm not sure if I should load with H4198 or H322 or other powders like that, I don't know what would give me the best results from a short barrel.

My opinion is it's very hard to beat IMR4198, seems everything else I tried takes up to much powder space. I've had good results with RL-7 but only in a Marlin GG where considerably less powder is used.
Don't discount those cheap 300gn HPs, they're the most fun you can have with your pants on ;)
They will absolutely turn a prickly pork inside out and completly de-hide the vermin!! There's not even pieces of meat left that you can find...it's unbelievable

Updates?

Now that I have a 45-90 (in a H&R SB2-based Buffalo Classic), I'm all the more interested. Even though its action can handle 50K psi, I have no inclination to try that in an 8 lb gun. Starting 45-70 loads plus 2-3 grains (this is a larger 45-90) for the Ruger #1 with H4198, H322 and IMR3031 will put me at 25-30K psi and will be my max loads that I'll work up to.

All that aside, you could also look at 457 WWG (Wild West Magnum) which is just a slightly lengthened 45-70 with its throat extended, giving a bit less than 45-90 capacity. Hodgdon has loads on their "Reloading Center".
