Reloading for the 45-70 Marlin is the only calibre that I reload for, where I never worry about pressure. The high loading is always governed by how hard I want my head to shake when I fire it!
I've played around with quite a few powders and lots of different loads, looking for a good, accurate load that is comfortable to shoot. One such load was 40 grains of 4198 with a 420 grain cast bullet. My notes on it show a good group, but, "Uncomfortable to shoot from the bench".
The Hodgden site shows 43 grains of 4198, with a 405 cast, which is virtually the same as my 420, as having only 31,600 CUP! Hodgden shows it at 1868 fps, which is no mean load.
Hodgden shows 32 grains of 4198 in the trap door group of loadings, 1,462 fps with a CUP of only 18,900.
I've had real good accuracy with 4895, in the ranges from 41 to 49 grains. The 45 grain loads have about the same apparent recoil as factory loaded 405 grain jacketed bullets.
Hodgden lists 48.5 grains of IMR 4895, 405 cast bullet, in the Trap Door group, having a velocity of 1,600 fps, with pressure of only 23,000 CUP!
As I said, I don't worry about excess pressure with the 45-70!
