Hey guys, take a look at the pics below. I loaded some 45 ACP for the first time. They ran through the gun fine but I noticed a lot of residue on the case. It wipes off with your fingers. Is this normal?

Interesting - 5gr Titegroup may be a little hot (truncated cone?). I see you are in the middle of the recommended loads but is there any unburnt powder residue on the table? My guess is 4.0-4.3 will work - it is a lighter load but may be worth trying. The inside of the case looks clean though and Titegroup is not the cleanest - so it may be normal. If you PM me I can check 5 gr titegroup on quickload for you to see what it says.

I've been reloading for a few years now and this also happens to me with 9mm and 45 acp with titegroup. I've read on the net and it seems that the staining is caused possibly by limited expansion of the brass to the chamber walls allowing gas to escape rearward streaking the cases. The two theories I read were possibly too much crimp amount, restricting expansion by limiting the sealing effect of the crimped case to the chamber wall or lower powder charges preventing sufficient pressure buildup to "seal" the case agains the chamber - possibly both. Honestly, it never really bothered me enough to experiment. I only crimp enough to let the round chamber and or case gauge so don't think thats my problem. Also, my titegroup loads are calibrated for minimum IPSC powerfactor so don't really want to play around with that. My cases come clean after tumbling so it doesn't really "bother" me.

Generally soot on the outside of the case means your load doesn't generate enough pressure to expand the brass and seal the chamber. 5 gr is not max but it is not anaemic either. Brass doesn't always expand well at these low pressures in the 15-16K range. Titegroup isn't the cleanest powder on the market, but that is a lot of soot even for Titegroup.

Is that a cast bullet? What lube are you using on it?

have a Norinco 1911 and my JR 45acp, get this lots with light loads, brass is not expanding to seal, that powder is dirty anyway I load on the high side and it clears up, what pistol and round count?

The Titegroup stain on the outside of my cases occurs in every caliber I load using the powder be it 9MM, 38spl, 40S&W or 45acp and across brands. CZ , Tanfoglio, S&W, Ruger, SIG or Norinco. It just doesn;t make any difference. If you shoot Titegroup it is going to happen.

I found the same thing with Titegroup but it shoots well It's my backup powder

Sounds like its not a problem...I wanted to make sure since i have never seen anything like this with my rifle reloads.

For those who were inquiring its a Dan Wesson Stainless Valor with 400 rounds through it. The bullets are Campro 200gr TC FCP.

It isn't a problem if you don't mind cleaning the extra fouling (which I suppose we can't escape with a blowback action), but there are much cleaner burning powders out there. I use Vihtavuori N340 in 45acp which burns considerably cleaner, albeit at a higher cost of powder.

I agree about cleaner burning powders but I do clean my guns after every match so whether one powder shoots marginally cleaner than another in my pistols really is moot. This is particularly true if you shoot lead bullets. Revolvers are a different kettle of fish and for my GP-100 my match ammo goes down the tube ahead of Clays. Practice ammo gets what ever is the cheapest or what I can find that does the job.
