45 acp loads...

im sure this has been covered numerous times but.... i have a semi auto 45 and wanna load up some shells. hp and fmj. suggestions? im told HS6 powder is the way to go. lead type and weight? primers? i want something that is clean. thanks!!
 
Just follow your manual and you'll be good to go

You could use the search function if you know the info has been posted already. You are asking for alot of info.

I'm pretty happy running Longshot and Rem primers and brass. I shoot either Hornady 230 XTP or Frontier 230 RN out of my M&P45, HK45, and Sig 1911. I find the powder to be clean burning.
 
Bullseye for me here, with a 230 grain cast slug. It'll work for jacketed bullets, and as a matter of fact, it was the powder designed for this cartridge.
 
I have used HS6 for reloading .45acp using 200gr cast bullets. I find the powder a little dirty, but it does the job. The lube could also be creating the smoke, lol. Just follow your reloading manual & you will be fine.

Ken waters had much to say about the 45acp. He said a 7th dose of 800x with any weight bullet worked great for him. As for my self I found that 6.5gr of unique under a 200gr swc works well. As for hunting rounds I use 10gr of 800x and magnum rifle primers under a 185 gr barns tac-x. The brass is only good for 2 loads like that but they are screaming out the end of the barrel. Of note this is way above max in any book and you should not try it.

I also find 800x to be cleaner that all other types of powder.

I have to ask friend. What do you shoot these handloads in? Sounds very hot.

I wouldn't try this. These are hot loads.
 
5.5 grains of 231 over a 200 grain swc is a pretty popular load. Mickey Fowler used to favour it in the old days according to one article I read.

Brutus' suggestion of 4.2 grains of Red Dot works as well.
