The best new barrel price I found was 60 bucks US, but a used barrel could be had for half that I'm sure.
Here is what I gather on freebore in 1911's: Some have none. Some have lots. How'm I doing so far?
If there is little freebore, requiring short seating and therefore lower case capacity, pressure spikes early, but if we freebore a barrel further, the bullet may be seated further out, allowing more powder so if we can use a slower burning type and we can use the whole barrel to accelerate - stay with me - so we can get a bullet going faster out of the same gun - so the target gets deader.
If I have time tomorrow, I might drive some .45s down to 1.10 COL and see what they do over a chrony - I think that bullets that went 780 average when seated to 1.20 will go 825 when seated to 1.10. The effect of decreased case capacity would be greater if the case is full - I think - hmmm - but I am not sure....... I have seen otherwise - where compressing the load began to slow the burn down.
Confusion sets in.
All argument rises to a level of complexity that is not understood, and the conclusions are worthless.
