Hey Folks

Watch out

Have run into a new one for me

While loading a bunch of 45 Acp recently

I was sorting through my brass that I had picked up at the range

As always happend got a few of other peoples as well as some of mine

But found about 10 45 Acp Brass with small pistol primer pockets

YES Small pistol primer

Found out that this is new thing on the market

Makes sense --- Saves buy large Primers

But watch out if you get one by mistake

Large primer will make a good bang try to seat it in small hole

Yep, Winclean .45 ACP as sold by Marstar and presumably everyone else uses a small primer...

Yep, it isn't terribly new to the market either. A lot of indoor ranges only sell the Winclean .45 and as a result you can buy the once fired brass for reloading. That's what I do, saves me from having to change primer systems from small to large when I switch between .40 and .45.

Hello:

Yes, the WinClean uses small pistol primers. For the benefit of reloaders I made a note to that effect on our website just in case. The manufacturer states on the boxes that they do not recommend reloading the cartridge cases but your mileage may vary: lots of firearms manufacturers counsel against using reloads so it is likely a litigation as opposed to another type of issue.

(For the record: I do a bit of reloading myself) :)

Not really that new, I have been picking it up at matches over the last 2 years or so. Since the manufacture recommends not reloading it I highly doubt that they did it to save the reloader from having to buy large primers (that they also sell). I think it is more likely that they did it so they wouldn't be reloaded (by someone that only reloads LP primers). I just sort them out and in a few years when I have 500 or so I will reload them then.

Don't think they will go bang unless your REALLY push hard while trying to seat a large primer in a small hole. I've run into a few this way that I missed after tumbling with out any problem and the primer survived to prime another.

Another thing with range brass that I have seen is flash hole drilled out near the size of the primer pocket. Not sure what effect that may have, I just deep sixed any that were drilled.

In 45 ACP? I've seen this done with 45 Colt that is used in quick draw (blank firing) to get maximum flame to pop the balloon.

Some batches of Yugoslav military 45 acp brass also have small primer pockets (and some have regular). I've reloaded them and used them for practise without incident or obvious variation from the regular ammo.

For anyone who's reloaded the Winclean brass: Do you have to up the powder charge to get the same FPS/Power Factor as with normal (Large Primer) brass??

Nope. I believe the primer hole is the extact same size as used on large pistol primed brass so there would be no difference. (or very very little  )

Just a PITA as far as I am concerned. When I run into the small pistol primed brass it goes into the recylce bin. Can't be bothered to sort out the odd piece.

+1, what a pain to run into them.

the flash holes should be the same size- if you run into ones that are bigger , then maybe somebody was using the casing for wax practice shooting or something- that's done to prevent them getting mixed in with "good" brass- as far as the large primer/small primer powder charge thing goes, i've recently switched to smalls and there is NO difference in the point of aim or function- 6 grains 231, 200 grain lwsc

Next time I run into a batch of them I'll keep you in mind. The warning on the boxes not to reload is a US liability issue. The brass will reload just fine. I don't reload them cuzz as I said before PITA to do so.

Guys below the 49th have tested identical loads small vs large pistol primers and no discernable difference was noted.

Take Care

small pistol primers

I shoot a 625-5" and only use small pistol primers. Brass is Winchester NT or ICC. Haven't got a real accurate round count for this year, but I am over 5000. Never had any problems. I have a friend who has shot for years using small pistol primers.

As well, I got 3000 loaded for winter shooting in Florida. I use 4.4 grs of Bullseye, 230 gr (lead and jacketed), Federal small pistol primers.

I am going to try Clays next spring, hoping it will not produce as much smoke.

One good thing about small primers, if you get brass with a large primer pockets, the small won't seat at all.

If you shoot cast, she's gonna smoke, it's not the bullseye. I quit shooting cast outa my 625, pain in the but to clean up. Shoot plated stuff, accurate and you clean her off with a rag when your done, no lead deposits.:dancingbanana:
