45 acp reloading

Today I cleaned and reloaded 185 rounds of 45 auto. Some of the brass was Sellier and Bellot. I have a hand primer to seat my primers and noticed that the large pistol primers were quite hard to seat in the S@B. The primer pocket appears to be slightly smaller than North American brass. Comments???


Also does anyone know the number of shell holder that accommodates 45acp brass with small primer but has the small hole in it for the decapping rod? This applies to my hand priming tool..a Lee.

I have issues with euro brass... S&B, Gecko, for example... but just needs a tender touch

Some brass have crimped pockets like S&B, some Federal, some Winchester, some Hornady, IVI and some Norc. Get yourself a reamer or swager and have at her.

Thanks for the reminder Trinimon, I was going to load some Norinco 45 brass tomorrow and completely forgot about that little detail

On a similar note, I reloaded some Privi and found the pocket way too deep and loose....
I don't know of a #2 sized shell holder with small primer pocket though....I hate that brass BTW, gets mixed in and messes up my flow.

I've crushed my share of primers by missing one of two cases when sorting brass from the range.

I had the same trouble loading S&B 9mm cases even using there own primers

Lots of free Norinco brass up at the range but it is harder to deprime and an extra whack to get them seated but after a few reloads no problems.

The SLIGHTLY smaller looking pocket is almost certainly due to the cases being crimped onto the primers. At the very least the edges on that brass will need to be eased with the internal chamfering tool. And more correctly a primer pocket reamer should be used to give the optimum form.

Shell holders SHOULD be universal. It's the outer support on the primer loading cup which is thinner or thicker for the two primer styles.
