IIRC, the LPP was originally as a "safety" measure due to the incomplete ignition of the powder in the original .45ACP case by SPP of the time. Basically, it was more certain that there would be complete ignition with a LPP, so they went with it. Nowadays, of course, with the QC and tech being better, SPP can reliably ignite the charge just as well as LPP can (in the .45)
That being said, there isn't a difference nowadays and I personally prefer the SPP, as I'm too lazy to keep switching out the primer seater on my Dillon just for .45ACP. I only load that caliber with LPP now if I'm planning on loading other calibers that use LPP too; otherwise, I use my SPP brass.
