45 ACP using Tightgroup.

I can't connect with the Hodgdon's reloading site so if anyone is loading 45ACP with Tightgroup a good starting load would be appreciated.
I am shooting a 230gr. Round Nose hardcast bullet and would like to see a velocity of +/- 800FPS.

I run 4.6gr TG behind a 230gr RN plated Campro pill in my 45ACP loads which averages out to 855fps from a 5" barrel on the Chrony. I'd say 4.4/4.5gr should get you on the 800fps mark, depending on the length of your barrel.
 
I'm not a fan of titegroup. Dirty in plinking loads, scorches brass, very hot (temperature). I've also read that it's not recommended for cast boolits due to the burn temperature.

I was using Unique but haven't seen any for a long time but I did pick up some Power Pistol,Bullseye and Tightgroup.
I am going to switch to the Tightgroup which gets even better mileage than Unique it seems (I was using 5.6 grains of Unique).

Ive been using it for 4 or 500 rounds now ya it scorches brass not sure if it weakens it seems to work just fine with my 3%tin 7% antimony mix for my 230gr cast boolits Try a pound see how it works no chrono yet but 4.5 gr works for me
 
4.3 as well behind 230gr. Works very well.

I don't think TG is any worse for cast bullets than any other powder. They all burn hot - some for a bit longer than others. I've never experienced a problem using it in 45LC or .38SPC. cast either. Is it the smoke you see coming from shooting cast that makes some think it's damaging the lead? That's just the lube; not melted lead.
 
Yes: don't use titegroup. It's miserable stuff. Point out where you're finding it and we will make sure that none is there to tempt anyone into trying it.

4.7gr for cast or plated 230gr btw ;)

I'm always up for a cleaner burning option. What are you using which is cleaner, cooler and still consistent with light loads?

I personally found that TG was cleaner than light charges of W231 and Bullseye. But I haven't played with a big variety of handgun powders. Locally TG is also popular with reloaders that shoot a lot of matches because they found that it stays consistent as the temperature changes.

The Hodgdon reloading data also includes TG in most, if not all, the common lead bullet handgun calibers. So I'm not sure where you found the idea for such a limitation.
 
I have shot a few hundred 230gr plated with varying light-mid charges of titegroup. My personal experience might be different from yours. I'm just adding a personal opinion. I'm finding that my guns get very hot, and after only a couple of mags, my guns are filthy. Maybe the brass I'm using is a little harder than normal, but it seems like it's not sealing the chamber. The lead thing is just what I've read while looking for reloading data - apparently smokey due to lube. I have not used it with lead.
I do know a bunch of guys that love titegroup (in 9mm), but For some reason I find it dirty there too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Honestly, I like 700x lol. It's not clean in light loads, but it works cleaner for me without the heat and scorching. I also load unique, but for more mid-range loads. In .40, I LOVE 800x (except metering it).

I'd love to try some 231 if I could find some. Apparently the VV powders are clean and accurate.
