.45 acp vs .357 vs .44 magnum

Good info Boomer !

I personally would hope to have my 12g full with slugs if a bear wanted to eat me as well. I asked about the three cals because imo the 500 and stuff are dam massive. witch is cool,,, but kinda 2 dam massive to really be practical. talking about the guns them self. and thinking about the recoil if you missed.

good info tho ! pretty neat to hear some real life use people stories.

Without a doubt.....44 magnum. If you've ever seen what kind of damage is done to a solid block of hardwood at 50 yards with a 300gr HP/XTP Hornady behind a decent amount of powder then you'll know what the term stopping power means.

Protection against a bear? Using a handgun.
45acp = NO
357mag = NO
44mag = Maybe
Calibres that you din't mention 454 Casull, 460 S&W, 500 S&W which would be YES,YES,YES for wheel guns. As for semi-auto gun a 50 Action Express would do. Truly to kill bears i'd take a 45-70 or a 444 rifle.
Just my 2 pennies.

As I said earlier, there is a difference between a hunting gun and a protection gun. In defensive scenarios, the range is close, the action fast, and your first shot might not result in a stop and might even miss altogether. The gun must be physically small if it is to be practical to carry while you are working, particularly in a mining related activities.

The necessity of a small gun excludes the choice of X frame S&W's, and it certainly limits the very powerful cartridges to reduced loads rather than full power. I think a Freedom Arms .500 Wyoming Express has some promise, as the belted cartridge keeps the cylinder diameter to a manageable size, but the guns are expensive for extended field use, and propriety ammunition has never been cheap. This cartridge loaded to its full potential is probably intimidating to even the most hardened shooter, and that is definitely not what you want in a defensive gun. A 440 gr hard cast WFN at 1100 should be manageable, but this cartridge can drive that bullet up to 1400, which would be distinctly violent on both ends in a 40 ounce gun. Still a manageable, deep penetrating .50 caliber bullet that cuts a full caliber hole could hardly be considered a poor choice.

Not that I've shot a bear with one but I think my new friend, the Dan Wesson 445 Super Mag might do the trick :)

I always tough that bears where sleeping in the winter ! ;)

Mush

bears will wander around in the winter. especially if they get disturbed or its a really nice day. And since bears do not hibernate, when they are awake they are FULLY awake.

I would chose a big bore levergun for a serious bear gun.

I posted the link. I don't get any warning if I navigate to the site directly but if I Google it then I do get a warning.
