Hi folks question here, I'm just starting to load .45 and curious if load development will be any different with large pistol primer brass vs small pistol primer brass.
I've got probably 400 lp brass and 150 sp brass.
I'm going to be loading with titegroup under 200g hard cast semi wad cutters.

The small primer ones are usually crimped and not worth the effort if you have access to large primer. I've used both in the past and have seen no difference other than more prep time.

Take the SP cases and set them aside or throw them away. Having cases with 2 different size primer pockets is a recipe for trouble. You'll end up trying to squash a LP in a SP pocket or vice versa where the primer will just fall out. SP 45 ACP cases...the answer to a question no one asked.

I actually like sp primers in .45. It's nice only having to keep one size primer on hand. Cheap dominion primers. Never have to switch the press over when switching from 9mm

Thanks for the info guys
I'll just keep the small primer brass to give away or sell
I was hoping titegroup at 4.4gr would be perfect as that's my load for 9mm

Cheers
Actually I should rephrase my earlier comment. Don't throw them away but definitely keep them separate from the LP cases for the reason I stated. I have about 800 45 ACP SP cases set aside for one specific reason. When the next shortage hits (and it will if Clinton gets in) shortages will occur and primers may be in short supply. If large primers aren't available I will still be able to shoot my 45s if I have small primers (I've got about 20,000 set aside right now) and SP cases. Maybe I'm overthinking this but we've seen at least two major component shortages since Obama got elected and unfortunately there's no reason to believe we won't see more.

Sound logic. However I have two Loadmasters, one set up with a small primer feed that I use for 9mm, 38 Spec & 40 S&W and one with the large primer feed specifically for 45 ACP. If I only had one press your suggestion would make a lot of sense.

I'm with you BigRobb! Had I thought about having to switch around the priming gear on my press every time I want to load .45 I'd have only purchased the SP'd factory ammo when I was first building a brass collection.

That would probably be a very good load.

When I deprime range brass I throw the SP cases in a small pail. When it is full, I make a special run of loading and load them up for some special load or gun.

Sounds good. That powder charge seems pretty good for the 200 gr SWC. I'm using that same charge for 185 JHP and it is a soft shooting load. I don't think it will make Major power factor for IPSC though but not sure if that's a consideration for you. I will use the small primer cases if I will most likely lose them in competitive events. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

IIRC, the .45ACP was designed with LPP in mind due to the erratic and anemic performance of SPP of the time (c. 1904)

Modern SPP are far better nowadays, and can thus be used in the .45
