I looking for what you guys are running for a hunting bullet in a 45 colt rilfe.
Sticking with 250g or anyone shooting 300g?
Front what I gather hornady XTP/HP are a go to?

I hunt a large Fir stand in the fall. 50yrds is about the furthest you could get a shot off

Any advice.
What kind of velocity are you guys running in rifles.
 
The xtp bullets are the best choice with the FTX bullets also being an option .. though I'm not certain if the FTX require you to trim your brass shorter than "normal" for .45LC as is required in some other calibers.

How long of a barrel is that out of?

I got some lil gun kicking around.
Have found both the 250 and 300g XTP I’m stock.
I am planning on running 4227 under some 250g plated bullets for plinking rounds.

My hornady book shows a shorter trim length for the FTX.

FTX have been accurate in other guns I have.
Haven’t stuck then into a animal yet tho.
 
I prefer cast bullets. Shot several bears and deer with 45 colt cast bullets from 280 to 325 grains. Velocity from 1100 to 1600fps. Can't say I saw much difference in killing power between the 280 at 1100 vs a 325 at 1600. Shot placement is almost everything.

This 300# plus black bear fell to a single 280 grain cast bullet at 1100. Broadside pass thru.

Exactly, so I think the FTX are not worth the hassle unless you really want their supposed advantages. For your hunting, it doesn't look like you would.

For the XTP options, choose based on your needs. They're designed with a specific impact velocity in mind, and the XTP mag are a different beast altogether. For your hunting, it sounds like you could probably keep your loads pretty mild, with the softest XTP option.

And I wouldn't be afraid to use correctly hardened cast as well (some currently available are too hard for hunting, imo). But for simplicity's sake, it's hard to go wrong with XTP here.
 
Taking big game with a cast bullet is a goal of mine.
I went done that path with my 30-30. But could not get any sort of accuracy.
Leaded up the barrel pretty bad too. So I kinda put it on the back burner.

Might need to revisit its with the 45colt
 
Sure, could be worth the investment. Probably best to slug the barrel to get it just right. No point in trying at all unless you can get properly sized boolits.

Or make your own ;)

I ran .309,.310 and .311
Gas check and not.
Trailboss and 4198.
I honestly thought I was giving it a solid effort.

Definitely want to revisit it.
 
Well finding what’s available. I think I’m going to go with the Hornady XTPs.
I also just bought a Henry big boy 16.5” bbl

So this is going get me in the 1500-1600fps range.

It puts me in the top end of what the standard XTPs are rated for and in the low end of what the XTP/mag are rated for.

Hmmmm. What to do?
 
The regular XTP will be fine. The "Mag" addresses issues presented by the insane pressure levels of .454/.460. XTPs aren't typically heavy on expansion so you will be fine.
 
Ordered some 250g XTP and a box of 300g XTP.
Hoping to get the 250g XTP to match me 250g plated bullets for POI.

Time will
Tell.
