.45 Colt Loads

Hodgdon is the place to visit. I load a nice amount of H110 under a 325gr FN GC water quenched monster. Launch them from a Win 94 Trapper at 1550fps with moderate pressures. I don't think it would be healthy in a Ruger unless designed to also shoot the Casull.

Your wrists are going to hurt... Fun, Fun, Fun, Fun, Fun...need a doctor.

Any tips for casting bullets? I just ordered a setup to cast 320gr. WFNGC bullets. I was going to use wheel weights for metal, should I mix them with something else? any help is appreciated as I am completely green when it comes to this.

Get yourself a new Lee or Lyman manual and follow the directions. The big issue is getting that alloy clean. Which is quite simple. Melt the ww, scoop out the metal bits and dirt, flux with parafin wax or casters flux, keep repeating until the alloy looks like mercury.

Start casting. I bet within the first 10 minutes of casting with a clean, non greasy, smoked mold, you get very nice bullets. Really a very simple process. A bit of practise will tell you the speed and how long to wait before opening up the mold and dropping out monster slugs.

I started shooting them as cast at 1550fps. Accuracy awesome. Penetration was 7" of phone book at 35yds with a huge exit wound. However, I did find major bits of bullets within the stack of books. Not so good if trying to destroy bones ala boo boo.

Go back, start water quenching. Really high tech so take your time and read these directions a few times:

1) Make bullets as before
2) Drop them in a bucket of cold water while still hot. If bullet sizzles, you did it right.

I like to drop them on a cloth first so that I don't risk getting water any where near the hot stuff. Yes, casting is tough on the brain.

Penetration now is amazing. Same amount of phone books. Obliterate them. For S&G's, stack three water filled milk jugs behind phone books to catch bullet.

hit phone books, vaporise jugs one and two, split number 3 in half and blow it off the stand. All at 35yds from a 16" 6lbs 9 shot rifle. No bullet by the way and no bits left behind either. Might have to use 6 to 10 jugs to slow this bullet down.

Try doing that with a 12ga slug and see what you get...

right on thanks Jerry! I ordered the Lee setup myself. So the wheel weight metal can be hardened enough without adding any other alloy to it, good to know that makes life simple.
