With lite charges, powder is lying length ways in case front to back spreadout, instead of it being clumped together.
(Assuming you are pointing the gun parallel to ground not sky)
When ignited the charge burns less concentrated.
Push can go more sideways than forward, results can be a squib
or worse blow back.
Thats why bulky powders are good for lite charges,
as they tend to fill the case more.
This is why when loading a muzzle loader the correct charge is used as well it is packed tightly
with no air gaps.

and why Trail Boss is becoming so popular for light loads, it was designed to fill the case with a light load.
 
I've been using Trail Boss in my .45-70 Hiwall and my Sharps.
It worked well, then got better when I topped off the charges with some Dacron filler, although they like different charges and bullet weights.

Thanks leadslinger do you think it is unwise to go down to 6 or 7 grains of Unique in my 45,s
 
There's nothing like a good loading manuel that will show starting loads as well as max loads.
Most powder manufacturers have online data free on thier websites.
Personally i never used unique so cant say.
.45acp i use 5.5 grains HP38 200 grain semi wad,
also used titegroup but cant remember charge for that.
.45 colt i used titegroup in the past, but now trailboss starting loads for cowboy using 200 grain home casted bullet.
I use the same Lee semi wad mold to make bullets for both.
