Okay, so the last batch of loads I made up with W296 seemed a little high for recoil level, at barely over minimum powder charge. Bullets I used last were 255 grain excel. What powders could I use to have at least a less sharp recoil impulse?
Also... anyone have a line on cast bullets?

The classic load for .45 Colt useing 7.5 grs Unique 255 gr bullet, works very good, accurate and soft recoil.

Cast bullets? Cast your own, I do. it's not hard to do and I find it quite rewarding.

Apparently "M.T. Chambers" sells cast, but he's not on-line. I assume he has a telephone. That business has been discussed here on a number of occassions, but the CGN search capability is either ridiculously lame or I am ridiculously dense - anyways I couldn't find any of those threads.

Sorry I can't help more.

i don't know what power level you are looking for in your .45 Colt, if it is a RBH you may want something heavier but I use Trail Boss powder for my 45 Colt loads...5.8grs. and the 255gr. Keith bullet....as discussed on this site before, the powder is very bulky and this charge precludes any chance of a double charge! PM me for details on M.T. Chambers (Sask. bulletmaker)

i just winchester factory, 7 grains of 231 but a plains 255 grain roundnose lead- seems to do all right- they're out of gull lake, probably a short drive for you- just google it

i just use the winchester factory, 7 grains of 231 with a bullet from plains- 255 grain lead round nose- supposed to be somewhere around 7-800 fps , but i've never chrony'd it- they're out of gull lake sask, probably a short drive for you, but you should phone first as i don't know whether he retails and see if he has what you need on hand
oh this is cute- i'm throwing doubles again- curses

you can shoot either out of the 45 colt- the acp loads will just shoot lower- but your other points were still valid- however, if you would have noticed his bullet weight, you would have realized 45 colt, or as you call it, 45 long colt- 255 grain slugs are typically too much for the 45acp , although you an use them if you really know what you're doing

did you mean 45 long colt? the info I gave is for 45 acp.

Probably for another thread, but this confusion illustrates the pitfalls of being "correct". The language Nazis, when they're not busy ensuring that no-one says P17 (it's Enfield Model of 1917), M96/38 (it's M38), etc., will slap the pees-pees of anyone saying 45 Long Colt or 45LC and not the "correct" 45 Colt. Then someone always has to ask: "you mean the rimmed one, not 45 ACP, right?"

I use 45 Long Colt and that's that.

WW-296 is a nice slow burning handgun powder well suited for heavy loads. I use both Unique and WW-296 in .45 Colt in a Ruger Blackhawk. With any given bullet weight and velocity level, powders with a faster burning rate than WW-296 will produce a sharper recoil impulse. My pet load for the Blackhawk is 22.8 gr of WW-296 behind a 200 gr cast SWC (use this bullet in .45 ACP); one handed shooting of these loads in the Blackhawk propells it to near vertical, but with a NO PAIN recoil impulse = lots of fun!
