Is .45 Colt interchangable with .45 ACP? Somebody told me yes but I am thinking no.

I was thinking of buying one of the Pietta SAA Peacemakers in .45 Colt. Is there any better price than $11.49 per 20 rounds at Marstar?

The reason I ask is because I will do not reload yet, and will not be buying one for 60cents/shot.

No...other than bullet diameter (and I'm not even 100% sure about that) these are very different rounds—.45 Colt is a longer, rimmed cartridge designed mostly for revolvers while .45ACP is a stubbier, rimless round (or maybe it has a vestigial rim...but much less than .45 Colt) meant mostly for semi-auto pistols.

The Ruger Convertable Blackhawk is still available with a .45 ACP cylinder, but this is was the only interchangeable system I am aware of for .45LC/45ACP. The chamber of the auto cylinder headspaces the round on the case mouth so half moon clips are not necessary. In modern ammunition, bullet diameter for both rounds is .451". Russel's should carry both rounds, but if you are going to to any amount of shooting, handloading works out much cheaper.

I don't know about the Pietta, but lot's of other single actions have been available in the past with interchangeable cylinders, allowing you to switch between 45 Colt and 45 ACP (which stands for Automatic Colt Pistol, which may be why some people confuse the two). They also have nominally different bullet diameters (451-452 for the ACP, 454-455 for the Colt), but a lot of the cylinders that were offered had throats cut for the 451 bullet. Unfortunately some also went the other way (some Model 25 S&W's for example), which didn't do anything for accuracy. You could have a 'smith ream out a 357 cylinder for one of the Piettas, throating it to match of course, and then you would have your own set, and be able to shoot both types of ammo. FWIW - dan

Are you sure that price isn't for 50 rounds? Most handgun ammunition is packaged in boxes of 50 ...

The last (and only) time I bought factory .45LC, I paid $11-$12 for a box of Winchester Super X 255 grain LRN. It came in little boxes of 20. It was just another reminder of why I reload.

I have bought .45 Colt "Cowboy Loads" in boxes of 50 for a price that worked out to a lot less per round than that - but honestly don't remember where - maybe it was just in the States ...

I shoot a lot more .45 Colt than everything else combined, because that is what all my cowboy action revolvers and rifles are chambered for. But I reload, of course - didn't realize that is what is being charged for factory loads up here!

Sounds like somebody ought to look into getting a Canadian distributorship for at least one of the commercial brands of cowboy action ammunition which are so readily available south of the border for that sport! -

Lots of other brands though, such as:

Black Hills

Ten-X

Collins Cartridge Company

Magtech (at Cabela's)

GOEX (at Cabela's) - yep, commercially loaded black powder cartridges!
