I got a new ruger blackhawk 45LC/45acp on it's way and I was wondering what bullets you guy's recomend and where is a place to look for decent pricing. I have been reloading for a few years with hunting rifle's but this would be my first pistol. So i'm not sure were to look for bulk bullets.

Budget Shooter Supply a supporting dealer and a great guy to deal with, see the box at the top of this page.
For .45 Colt I cast my own 200 grain (.452 ) round nose flat point bullets, these have the grooves for lube which are used with black powder.
Budget lists Berry's .45 (.452) Cowboy action 250 grain copper plated bullets round nose flat point for $18.00/100.
The flat point punches a nice hole in the paper target which is easy to see.

Number one question is "What size do I need"? Since you don't have your revolver yet I would hold off until you have it in your possession. My newer .45 colt Ruger has cylinder chambers that are .453 and a barrel that is .452 which is perfect. I size all my bullets to the chamber size and it shoots great.

My older ruger was a nightmare to try and get any kind of accuracy out of. I tried and tried and best i could do was minute of pie plate at 25 yards. It sat in my safe for probably 10 years before I realized or even thought about the ruger miss match that was common for a while in the 70's and early 80's, small cylinders and large barrel.

Cylinders were .452 and barrel was .454 well no wonder. I had the cylinders opened up to .455 and amazingly the thing came to life and is still very accurate.

So wait and measure your cylinders and barrel and then decide what size bullet you need. No use buying some bullets just to get crappy accuracy and a leaded barrel.

I didn't realize there was such a large variance with pistol 45cal. I was looking at the Wolf website and noticed they had 45cal bullets from .451 - .458. What's the reason? The older guns weren't made to the tighter tolerances? I should add the mine is a new one

Older colts at .454 and sometimes .452. The ones made at the start of the 1900's were sometimes as big as .456. A new out of the box Ruger can be .452 t0 .454 depending on lots of factors. You are just going to have to wait and see what you get. They have been getting better especially with the vaquero's because of the cowboy action seen, word travels very quickly if they are made poorly.

There is a gunsmith in the US "Cylindersmith" that only does cylinder work and the majority, like 90% are Ruger revolvers.

Henry at Budget is indeed a good guy to deal with. :) Also check out thebulletbarn.com, on the Sunshine Coast. They have a few distributors around as well, one of whom (Peter Riedel, aka rustywood.ca; "Horsesheet" on CGN) is right around the corner from me here in Mission.

i've had the same gun( 3 years back) - it's a 451- and i found it shot incredibly low- like a good foot or more at 10 yards, so i had to take some meat off the front sight- and that was with the colt cylinder, not the acp- you'll probably find, as i did, that the acp cylinder stays in the junk box and it's most of the time set for colt- and i put a set of hogues on mine if that makes a difference- i used a standard 250-255 grain lead round nose- rugers do tend to the 451 bore size, even my 70 series OLD ARMY is a 451

So what bullet powder combo do you guy's recomend. And lead or jacketed bullets? Anything special about each or is it just price?

were they reduced loads/ cowboy action? and did it have adjustable sights?

Congrats on getting a Ruger convertable 45LC/45ACP:). Recently picked up one myself at a gun show in Naniamo, 4 5/8". I'm not 'really' a fan of SS but when I saw it I weakened;). A guy I used to work with who is now into making holsters made a holster for it and for an early model 5 1/2" Vaquero in 45LC.

Both the barrels on my Vaquero and my convertable are 0.452" and the 45LC cylinders are 0.453". The 45ACP cylinder for my convert is 0.452". I get a variety of 45LC & 45ACP cast bullets from a friend locally. Jacketed I use are 0.452" and all cast & jacketed work fine:D.
