Today I went out with a new forum member. He wanted to tag along for a coyote hunt so I could show him what I know. He arrived at my place and we headed out just in time to reach our first setup at first light. As we exited the vehicle I hear the vehicle door slam and look over to ryandir (our newer forum member) and with a startled look on his face, he apologies. (Rookie Mistake)
....
I set up the caller and decoy about 40 yds in front of us (which it turns out weren't needed or used). There was hardly any wind, just a slight breeze blowing from us into the field (45 degrees away from the bush). I started off with a couple of coyote greeting calls with my hand caller. I waited a minute and gave a big shout out with my dying rabbit hand call for about a minute and then went silent. After about the first minute or so the decoy stopped working WTF…. I then gave out another loud rabbit distress call with my hand caller,….. I waited another minute and gave a third call out with my hand caller and way in the distance I noticed a black object. I thought it was a raccoon for an instance because it was so dark and small from that range. I gave a few soft calls on my hand caller and that dark object got bigger and turns into a coyote. He starts making his way over to us…He eventually checks-up about 150 yds or so, I lip squeak to him and he comes in another 50 yds or so and for some reason, I drop the ecaller remote and my foxbang kicks in. This sudden loud (coyote pup distress)sound causes the coyote to stop quickly, he begins to look nervous so I take the shot, he spins around 3-4 times and then looks like he is going to try and make a break for it but I let another round off and down he goes…. After approaching him, he turned out to be not as black as I originally thought (very dark nevertheless) but much bigger than I suspected. I was going to skin him out on site but I wanted to take him home as he appears to be one of the biggest coyotes I have shot. After getting him home weighing him several times, official weight comes in just over 45lbs….
