45 LC Reload help for Cowboy shooting

Ok here it is.

I am just getting into Cowboy shooting and need some info on reloads for 45 LC.

What bullet wieght do most use and what are the advantages.
What powder?
I have Starline brass.

the factory is 7 grains of 231, 250grain lead round nose- give about 750 fps-

I use 7 gr unique with a 250gr RN for both rifle and revolvers

Depends on what you can get for powder. I use a 250g LRNFP on top of 5g of Ramshot Competition and results are xlnt.

Just as a caution, my Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8" barrel chrono's at 840 fps with Wolf reloads. He used a weighed 6.3gr of W-231 with the 250gr RNFP

HOWDY; Starline is stiff brass so a 250 may be the best to help seal the case from blowback. I and others use 200 in revolvers but if you have a marlin rifle 200s will give blow back over the bolt into your eye. SO I end up with schofield length brass 200s in revolver and 250s in colt cases for the rifle.

mine's DIRECTLY from the WINCHESTER manual- and a 7.5 inch barrel -13000 fps pressure- that's THEIR factory load- maybe your chrono's off a bit?

7 grains of 231 under a 250 RNFP is definitely my choice in my S&W hand ejector.

Titegroup 5.6 GRAINS 250 grain RNFP...Rifle and Revolver ..very accurate. Check Hodgdon

Don't rule out UNIQUE......Trail Boss will give you light loads.

I prefer to use 250 grain bullets, as I feel that if I am going to shoot a .45 Colt, then I might as well act like it. I know that some are shooting 200 grain, or even lighter, and loads that barely dribble out of the barrel. Again, I prefer to have at least 750 fps, and I get that with Red Dot as my favourite.

There's .45 Colt 230 grain cast Cowboy data on Alliant's site. Only max loads listed so reduce by 10% and work up.

5.5 gr Trail Boss driving a 350 gr bullet for me.
I like the way TB fills the case.
Easier for these old eyes to check for doubles etc.
