Gentlemen,

I have a question regarding the "apparently" interchangeable .45 LC and .410 slug cartridges for a shotgun.

This is new information to me as I didn't even seem to think of this as being an option. First things first! Can these 2 very different cartridges be interchanged in a shotgun ( the H & R Tamer in my case ).

If so, can I also use .454 Cassull and .460 S&W seeing as how all of these cartridges are interchangeable (assuming an originally chambered .460 SW gun is used)?

I should also mention that there is nothing mentioned on either the barrel or the instructions that came with the gun.

Thanks

First, I am not a gunsmith.

I cannot see a shotgun being able to take the pressures generated by such cartridges as a 454 Cassull, 460 S&W etc.
I remember reading that a 500 S&W produces pressures up near 60,000 pounds.
Ouch.

The design of a shotgun barrel, no rifling, a choke at the muzzle , does not seem ideal for firing cartridges.
I think you would be creating a hand grenade ( In my opinion ).

You seem to be asking 2 different questions.
I don't know if I'd want to fire a 45LC out of a 410, although I don't think there would be a problem with the reverse (shooting a 410 shell out of a 45LC single). I believe the 45 is a little bigger in the bore.

As for the 454/460/45LC interchangability - think of them like shotgun shells; the 460 being 3-1/2", the 454 being 3", and the 45LC being 2-3/4". Whatever it's chambered for, you could shoot that or whatever is shorter (ie - you could use a 460 or 454 or 45LC in a 460, or 454 or 45LC in a 454). If you go bigger than the gun is designed for - KABOOM.

And like colinjw said - if you decide to use a 454 or 460 in a 410, make sure your insurance is up to date and you say goodbye to those who matter in your life.

Hmmm...

I do know that there is at least one firearm out there that will allow you to fire both .45 and .410 interchangeably. The various Taurus "45 10" models will digest either 45 or 410, and are apparently a pile of fun. However...they are designed to digest both types of round. I for one enjoy the use of my hands and eyes far, FAR too much to attempt putting anything into the chamber of a firearm that it was not designed for.

Because my cynicism has yet to overcome my empathy for other humans, I would ask you not to try firing anything other than a .410 shell out of a .410 shotgun. If you choose to disregard this advice, then please make sure that there is nobody around you to share in the consequences.

Edit

After examining the H&R website, it appears that they manufacture a .410/.45 colt called the "Survivor". This particular shotgun is obviously capable of firing both rounds...but when I looked at the description of the tamer, there was no mention of .45 colt. If you really want to fire .45 out of your .410, I would sell the tamer on the EE, and buy a Survivor.

I've been doing some reserch on those guns and pretty sure the .410 Tamer CAN'T shoot .45LC. You would need their Survivor model to shoot .45LC which I'm guessing has a rifled barrel. And evn then .454 and .460 is a big NO-no. As been mentioned the pressures are WAY too high... Standard .45LC is OK because it's fairly low pressure.

Thanks for the info. if I want to shoot .45 Colt, I need a different gun, the .410 Tamer I own is not suitable for .45 Colt.

Gentlemen, those are 45LC rifles capable of shooting .410 shotshells. They are NOT 410's that can shoot 45LC.

Cheers

i didn't know if I should post on this as i wouldn't want anyone to read my post wrong and become just a greasy spot on the ground!!!! The .45 Colt (factory) loads and the .410 produce roughly 12,000 PSI or so ........the .454 has shown pressures up to 60,000psi....in this day and age I'm suprised that anyone would chamber a gun that would chamber the .454 in a gun meant for the .45 Colt or .410, sounds like a bomb waiting to go off!!

I have a Win. 94 in 45 LC and 410 shell will NOT fit in the chamber. I have fired 410 shells in guns chambered for 45-70, but the rifling spirals the shot away making it virtually useless. Maybe 10yds on a sitting grouse, maybe.
