Does anyone out there shoot a 45 Super using turned 308 brass, this is a great gun to pack for bush work, loads of power using a 200 wad cutter and 11.5 grns. of longshot and a 24lb recoil spring and 200 shock buffs, easy handled recoil and damn good accuracy. beats the hell out of wheel guns. :wink:

It pushes about 1250 1300 fps, hardly any barrel jump, just like a HEAVY IPSC load, yes I would like a heavier load if one comes available from a reputable gun smith Like Gunner in Prince George ect. Stay in touch on this as this is the way to go for a good carry load.

I believe so, he is the one who set me up with the 308 turned down cases due to their strengh over Star Line brass in 45 super, Gunner will help you with this conversion. Try it you will never go back to a 41 or 44 wheel gun after feeling the recoil difference and 10 shot capacity, I feel safe with this gun while taking clients out in bear country. 5 min. conversion from my IPSC gun and I'm in buisness, but I have asupported bull barrel, not needed though.
The Starline .45 Super brass is strong enough.
Any .308, 30-06, .270 family of cartridge can be used to duplicate it. Whatever, you have to neck ream it after cutting it. Lots of work. ( refer to Handloader manual of cartridge conversion for more specs is required.)
Why not use ready made .45 Super brass ? Easier.
There is nothing more to do than add a 24 pounds spring ( if you already have a fully supported chamber ) to do this conversion.

Thanks for the info on loads, I am using turned 308 cases due to the pressure generated, I see no pressure data on this re-load page, or reference to jacketed or lead bullets, I had a gun blow up in my hands once due to this, so unless I feel safe I just us Gunners loads and so far no more troubles.
Sorry I goofed on that reply, brain dead tonight. I am quite leary about using loads that do not show pressure and Gunner does not recomend the Star Line brass. why, due to strength, I believe. You may be right on this brass, what have you actualy loaded in the 230 grn. and have you used the powders noted on load sheet. Once bit, always leary and I hate to screw up my IPSC gun, need a Norinco to play around with.
The brass made of rifle casing is stronger but might also cause overpressure because of thicker case wall (reduced powder capacity). If you are not equipped ( a die and a reamer) to inside ream the 308 rifle case to make space for the 230 grain bullet, you are risking higher pressure.
If you do not like the .45 Super brass, you can maybe find .45 Winchester magnum brass. This is the first choice over rifle brass because only lenght need to reduced. If not, then commercial ammo in loaded in the USA wich will be a good source of brass also, but still hard to get by in Canada.
You can find load info published by DBI : books of the .45 / Hindman and Grennell are the guys who invented ( credited to have developped) the .45 Super
They were using trimmed .451 Detonic brass in those days. I am not aware that they ever used rifle brass for this purpose.
I have not loaded the 230 grain with the loads on the link provided. I used the 185 grain load data over a Sierra 185 grain Tournament Master FMJ bullet in a modified STI/ Starline .45 Super brass. My other loads were with Hornady 200 SWC FMJ.
Starline was never my first choice in my other high pressure guns ( 9X21mm ) I never got a case failure, but they did not last for more than 2 or 3 reloading. My guess is that it will be the same with the .45 Super brass I have.
I am experimenting with it. I will load some 230 grains and give it a try for sure.
