2 3/8" is an old oddball, 3" is the common with 3 1/4" a carry over from BP ,

I believe you are right, when the OP said it was a combination gun, I assumed the 2 3/8 was the length of whatever shot shell it was paired with. So I read your post, dug up my Manual of Cartridge conversions and they explain the three different case lengths.

To the OP...ignore my referral to the Hornady book, all it will do is help you with the longer cases.
 
You should be able to use 400 gn 45-70 loads and work up using a chronograph until you reach about 1900 fps. Use those powders on the slower end of the scale for the 45-70 and you should be able to find a safe load that works.
 
I found some more information on this rifle. It is in caliber 10.3 x 60R Swiss, which is basically a 450/400 nitro. Still a common caliber and RWS is producing it. Thanks everyone for all the information.
