.450 Marlin bolt gun velocity

Hey Folks,

I was on the Steyr website the other day and I noticed that they have introduced a new (to me at least) rifle model known as the Big Bore chambered in .450 Marlin with a 22 inch pipe...This has interested me to say the least as I figure a bolt gun in that cartridge would be pure:evil: for short range work...So, has anyone heard of anybody chambering a bolt gun or single shot in the 450 and what kind of ballistics they were getting? Many thanks.

Joel

Think hot 45-70,l loaded to max in a new rifle, same thing pretty much, should hit like the hammer of thor inside 200 yards...

The 450 marlin should be in a short action bolt gun, where you could load the 350gr speer to just over 2200fps.It would make a great stopper inside 200yds.

If you use the same load in both guns the 45/70 will produce less pressure as it has more capacity. The .458 American has been doing what your talking about for 50 years......458X2" in bolt guns.

.450 Marlin Ballistics Inquiry

Hey folks,

Thanks for the replies, I've had a look on the various websites etc and velocities seem to be around the same as a 45/70. But one could increase the pressures abit when loading for a bolt action rifle, not that I would of course:) . I also located some data for a 45/70 loaded in a Ruger #1, in either the nosler or hornady handbook that showed the '70 spitting out 500 grain slugs at just over 1800 fps:eek: from a 22 inch pipe! So, a reduction in charge size and go from there may be in order...But as with everything this is published data and in my experience handbook velocities can be exagerated a bit...Thanks again.

I get 1860 out of an 18.5 with 500's
Tsk tsk? WTF is this ####?

Hey DDB,

Are those velocities from a .450 Marlin or a 45/70? They are impressive either way, you should be getting about 3750 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle with that load...nice

JYC, the rifle is still in the planning stage, along with alot of other projects:redface:. I'm in the process of picking up a .350 rm so I'll fiddle with that while I try to pick up a donor action for the 450 project, the steyr is way too much dough at $2100.00.

45-70. And JYC is familliar with the load:D I still have some left:D
I was going to pull em, and lighten em up a bit I have a few left I did too at 1480 fps. Either would be an end to end moose load:popCorn::popCorn::popCorn:

The .45-70 can (and often is) loaded up to where the .458 Magnum starts. I run a 400gr speer FP in my 1895 rifle at just over 1800 fps without pressure signs (IMR 3031).

I must admit thought that it is not a joy to shoot at the bench. Very manageable when standing though.
