.454 Casull vs. .480 Ruger

I liked the .480 Ruger redhawk I had , recoil much like a 44 Mag and was a decent target gun .

I have a bunch of .480 ammo for sale if anyone is looking ......cheap !! ;)

I have a 7.5" SRH in 454 Casull.

I have checked into the ballistics quite extensively and the 475 and 500 Linebaugh don't really do that much more if any over it.

I now load 360gr WLNGC's @ 1520fps and 390gr WLNGC's @ 1420fps and these are not top loads. If I worked on it just a little bit more I would be getting another 30 to 50fps without any problems.

Jae-Bok Young now even supplies a 420gr WFNGC .452 cast bullet which should be able to do 1300fps so saying that there are far heavier bullets available for the larger caliber guns isn't really a true statement.

Felt recoil of my 390gr loads is actually less than the 360gr loads, and the 454 bullets penetrate deeper than the larger calibers as well.

If you where to go to a 500 S&W then you would definately get a more powerful round but I feel that the handgun is just to big for carrying so takes it out of the realm of this discussion.

yes the 500 is way too big to carry comfortably and get into action quickly. Maybe that new shorter barrel option would be better but I couldnt imagine the muzzle blast that close to my face:eek:

Another problem for me with the 500 S&W is that the 454 Casull is tops for me when it comes to recovering quickly from recoil and being able to fire again.

I don't have a ATC but .454 cassul is a bit more powerful than .480 ruger, plus you can use .45colts in the .454 for practice...

454

I have carried a SRH454 for at least 5yrs, and love it. I shoot 314gr lead with a gas check at 1690FPS. I use Li'l gun powder. I have shot one bear who had issues needless to say there where no more issues.
454 all the way.

I carry a RSRH 454 Casull during the Grizzle bear seasons that is chopped to 4.25". Its quite easy to carry in a custom Mernickle horizontal shoulder holster. The stock grips were changed to Pachmyer Decelarators and the single action trigger was tuned for a real crisp let off. Know the gun is great to carry. Far as reloading goes as Camp Cook pointed out its right up their as one of the best cartridges for reloading. Factory Winchester 300 grain ammo is plenty powerfull for most applications (I agree bigger is better). Being able to shoot .45 Colt rounds is what makes the Ruger Super Red Hawk .454 Casull such a fantastic ATC fire arm. You can actually aford to practice. Having said that I carry a Springfield Armory Operator modified to fire Armco's 45-08 rnds during the winter. Because you feel that big cylinder on your ribs when you fall down in the bush.
