454 Casull

I too have a Toklat, I have made up lots of loads mostly with .454. What exactly do you mean by "target" loads? That is not a usual use for this cartridge... If you mean lighter loads or .45C +p kind of thing I can help you there too...

I would suggest loading up .45C brass then. I use Campro 250 FCP bullets with 27.5 grains of H-110 (296). Does nearly 1400fps out of the Toklat. It's a handful without being tiresome like most .454 loads. It's fairly economical too, for a full on magnum load.

That's a good call not loading something like I suggested if you have any .45s in your collection. It's only suitable for .454 revolvers. You could load the same in a .454 case with little trouble. I like using a Rem 7.5 primer, it is about as energetic as a small rifle primer can get and helps lower velocity spread in the big .454 case. I use XTP-Mag bullets for full house loads. The 240 is nearly half the cost of the 300.

Just a heads up, use regular small rifle primers(CCI 400). The magnums cause a really crappy burn and it took me a long time to learn that. I actually learned it in my 223...mag primer lost about 300fps relative to regulars.
They push the bullet too far down the bore and it causes lower chamber pressures. This applies for all reloading and is especially important in straight wall cases as the bore to chamber ratio is almost equal so the pressure drops really fast relative to bullet position in the bore(as the bullet moves down the bore, the chamber volume increases to include the bore and drops the pressure to accommodate the increased volume). This is why necked cartridges are better than straight wall.

If you want a real reduced load starline makes a case that they call .45 cowboy special about the same length as .45acp, it’s compatible with the casull and .45 colt.
