I have a Marlin 1895 gbl and I loaded up some 400 bullets. On one load using h4198 the action started opening up after I fired it meaning the lever started opening. I worked up and it started doing this at 50 grains of h4198. The velocity of the 3 shots were 1979,1981,1964. I'm thinking that there's too much pressure and I should use the loads that are little bit lower. I do like the velocity but it might be too much what do you guys think

I use 38gr imr 4198 with 405gr cast bullets at around 1500fps. I get good groups but only tried at 50 yards.

Why do you need the higher velocity?

Your just below the data I have kicking around. I find the lever pops open more due to recoil of the rifle and your hand jamming around in the loop then pressure. But better safe then sorry and and Extra 75fps aint going to kill a griz any deader.

My 2 cents

I load my 405gr JSP over 48gr H4198 and have no issues in my Marlin. I don't think the 2gr difference between your load and mine is the problem. Could just be the recoil and/or your hand like c.t.smith said.

They are notorious for being hard on the hands, that's why when I bought mine I deliberately bought an SBL for the big loop lever

I'm just holding it I guess I can hold it tighter

Personally speaking, I don't grab it in a death grip or anything, but I do close my fingers around the pistol grip and lever ring at the same time, and am conscious of keeping the lever ring up against the stock before squeezing the trigger.

But with lighter 300-350gr loads, I don't worry about it so much, if at all
