4570 gas checks

Marco594 & Yomamma offer sage advice.
500 grains sucks up a lot of lead. Tough to achieve 2000 FPS.
LEE offers a two cavity 340 grain RN bullet that with the right powder can achieve 7.62X 39 velocities. Powder coat them, no need for a gas check, and it’s a hard hitting rounds that will take most big game.
And be a brush buster.

If the bullet is designed for the 45-70 lever guns, the nose is about the same profile and length but the shank gets longer with heavier bullets. Eats powder capacity too. .

You might not be able to get a 500gr bullet to high enough velocity that the gas check is needed. Pressures will max out in the 1600fps range. Hard to get them going much faster without going over pressure.

Sorry if this is a dumb question... (just learning about 45/70 reloading ) if it’s not needed why do you sell a 500gr with a gas check? (45/70)

because some people shoot a 458 Win mag...........and modern non-lever 45-70s can just about keep up to them, speed and pressure wise

A modern, hot loaded 45-70 400gr load can just about keep up with the 458winmag 500gr load. Powder capacity of the 458Win is much larger - there is no replacement for displacement.

I’ve had great accuracy casting a Lee 405gr plain base bullet over IMR 4198. Same goes for 38-55 with Lee plain base mould.
It’s a 45/70 not a .458 Win mag.

IMR4198 is my go-to for 45-70 and several other straight walled or large bore cartridges. You can load it warm or soft and it works with (reasonably) consistent velocity and clean burning even at reduced pressure starting loads.
