Well guys, Dave just notified me my reamers should be shipped this week to build my 458-416 Ruger imp 40 deg, bought the donor rifle earlier this fall in the form of Rem Custom shop 458 WM, so as soon as the reamer arrives I'll have a new big bore to play with. Bought a bunch of W-W 375 H&H brass to trim back and blow out for it and got a couple hundred 500 gn bullets to play with. Hoping to get 23-2400 fps, should match the Lott with ease and might even get to the Ackley velocities, but I will keep the pressures down in case I might want to take it for some ballistic testing on buff one day soon. I will probably use a bunch of cast bullets I have, to form the cases and then load the 500 gn JSP and FMJs for testing after.

be sure to post some pics, love the big bores + love the wildcats, whats the projected muzzle energy with the 500 gr.?

2300 fps = 5875 lbs/ft
2400 fps = 6400 lbs/ft
2500 fps = 6940 lbs/ft

Should fall somewhere in those figures.

mv X mv X bul wt in grns
450222...........this is a constant I developed to easily calculate energy

I'm confused, you called it a Ruger wildcat, but you said you bought 375H&H brass. Is the 416 ruger the parent case?

He's going to fire the trimmed back belted cases in the Ruger chamber which will iron out the belt and fully fireform the case. Douglas posted results of firing belted brass in the Ruger chamber earlier this year and it seemed to work out fine.

So, cue Douglas and his coal shovel (for getting powder into the case) and Gatehouse to proclaim this the New King of the 45's, if he can get past Douglas' lust for PSI.

I have been thinking and I may just deep cut this chamber to a case length of 2.65 instead of 2.58, it'll give considerably more case capacity and I have lots of action length and seeing as how I'm using 375 H&H brass anyway.................HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM................Interested in your thoughts on this.

Negative on the new fancy wood Kevan, it has a pretty nice piece already and I'm going to rebed and pin it. It may not be a keeper, not sure yet might just end up "flavor of the week". I think I'll have to add a second recoil lug to the barrel as well and then will probably full length bed it. It is, after all, just a Rem 700.............LOL

If I do fall in love with it I think I would cut it back to 20"s and full stock it, wouldn't that be a sweet little thumper and short and handy in the thick stuff. It should be an extremely efficient cartridge and lose very little from 24" to 20" barrel. It should give Lott comparable ballastics even in a 20" barrel.

It will feed nicer than a Lott, and if you cut the chamber a tad longer it will probably equal one of the .458-404 wildcats. Why Remington never brought out a .458 Ultra is a mystery to me, though not to them, but this might be even better. A 350 gr TSX will shoot flat enough for most North American hunting situation, and there is a broad range of heavyweights should you need to add another elephant to your wall. So Doug, if I was to send you my M-70 . . .

Anything based on the Ruger case design is the New King of its respective caliber. That's been long established. ;)

:)After checking some case specs etc, that was my guess. Hope to see more postings as things develop.

I've changed my mind again, I'm going to just go the 2.58 case length initially to see what the factory case will do and keep it short enough to run through a 300 WM length action. I can always deepen it in the future if I'm going to keep it and hunt with it. This way if I do sell it all a guy has to do is fireform 375 or 416 Ruger to make brass.

Boomer...no problem on the Mod 70, I think this will make a significant improvement over a standard 458 WM without any other modifications to the rifle or lose any magazine capacity. I also bought the reamer to make the dies with, by the way.....Who wouldn't like to add 25-30% to the energy of their 458 without sacrificing any magazine capacity or costly rifle mods? This really is the whole point of this project, when I think about it.
This should be a very practical conversion and for those who don't feel the need to work at the extreme north end of the performance curve, Hornaday brass is readily available and probably will work considering how much a rifle like this gets shot. Let's face it 50 rounds of brass will likely last the shooting life for most people.

I had Dave make this reamer with a full .500" throat so 500 gn homogenous solids can be crimped in the right spot and not encroach on the powder capacity. Or in your case Boomer 550 or 600 gn bullets may be used without sacrificing too much powder capacity.
