Just changed the scope on my .458 Lott back to a fixed 4x. The Leupold M8 Compact 4x28mm has good clarity and generous eye relief. Long discontinued, I have one on another rifle.
The current FX-I RF 4x28mm is dimensionally identical to the M8 4x Compact. I purchased one a while back, had it parallax-corrected to 100 yards and got the reticle changed to a Leupold Dot (2.5 MOA subtension) for simple and effective rangefinding capability.
Excellent results with the 45 caliber 300gr TSX on game. The Hornady 300gr HP shoots to about the same POI at 100 yards so is useful for off hand practice at 1/3 the cost of the 300gr TSX.
Range results as shown with both bullets. A mild load for the .458 Lott, muzzle speed for the thin-jacketed 300gr HP is limited to < 2800 fps otherwise it will disintegrate in flight.
Muzzle energy is 5000 ft-lbs. Good to go.
